Oh, the weather outside is frightful

Weirdly, my local pond in Broadwaters remains almost entirely ice free but the much larger Podmore pool has been frozen over for days.

The old millpond is fed from Podmore but currently (unsurprisingly) has very little water flowing out of it at the moment and certainly isn't moving water.

About the only thing I can think of is that it's partially spring fed and the water coming out of the Earth is a bit warmer.

Local schools closed but not a flake of snow on the road ,guildford to farnham bus running normaly ,traffic fine.

Strange if your kid has a day off school they threaten you with a fine yet schools can close for absolutely no reason keeping hundreds of kids of school what next as it thaws they have an inset day or two?

There's about a half inch of snow here today, enough to keep me indoors and away from all the idiots on the road who don't have a clue of how to drive on snow. I'll take another look this afternoon and may venture out then.

More snow today,(about 5 inch), but the driving was much easier. The hill that took over a half hour yesterday, took under 5 mins today. I agree with ajay though, there are many drivers who have no experience driving in these conditions, as well as those that just don't think. Some are over confident through ignorance, while others over cautious through fear. Then there are the 4x4 drivers who think that just because they have extra grip to keep moving, think that 4 wheel drive means they can brake, and stop, as if conditions were normal. I've see two today brake hard, and skid on for several feet.

My main problem is that because it's not been above -3 C for the last couple of days, my screen washers are still frozen!

We had 9" in a couple of hours on Monday 26th, but cloudless after that and the sun has burnt half of it off the open ground. No more snow since but still below freezing and fierce E/NE winds have blown the snow off the trees. Many birds feeding on our scraps, pheasants, jays, other corvids, gulls and about 20 different smaller species.

Very true - fortunately we can keep both car and campervan on the drive for the next few days until the thaw comes. The main hazards are the various groups you mention - it doesn't matter how good a winter rally driver one might be - if some prat has got himself stuck broadside across a narrow road, nothing can get by A big 16-wheel artic was jammed across the road in front of our drive for most of Monday

Then your screen wash mix is not strong enough. In the alps it gets down to -20 but the premixed stuff you buy in Carrefour does not freeze.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Starting to look a bit more like "real snow" in Southampton now. it's been snowing light powdery stuff off and on all day but starting to get heavier now.
