New rod

Recommended Posts

After spending the last few years mainly sitting behind buzzers fishing for big fish, this year I intend to scale down a bit.

I live on a cracking small river that contains Roach, Bream, Chub and Barbel as well as carp and catfish in the lower reaches. To celebrate I have acquired a super new (to me anyway) float/trotting rod that will be getting its first outing tomorrow.

The rod is a Shakespeare Excelsior 13' a rod I have coveted since a mate had one years ago. Very light and super slim I was lucky enough to find one that looks as if it has hardly been used. Now all I need is a semi decent centrepin to go with it.

Sportsman,

"Decent" and "centrepin" do not belong in the same sentence.

Can do a lot worse than the Okuma Sheffield for what you need it for (Barbel, Chub, Roach, Dace, Carp etc. on streams and smallish rivers ). Its my workhorse when using a pin for trotting streams and small rivers anyway; I was introduced to it by the late Keith Speer on the upper Lea; however there are lots of other good alternatives to choose from including the AnglersNet centrepin if you can still find one.

An Okuma Aventa if you can get one is a good investment

Good advice from Keith, the Okuma Sheffield will do all you want for a very long time.

But Rusty, there is no three year wait for them to build it for you, it's clearly an inferior piece of kit unbecoming of an elite angler... :bleh:
