First Sand Martin seen in Hampshire today, (not by me), they're usually our first summer migrant to arrive.

Earliest Hampshire arrival recorded since 1954 was 23rd February, Average earliest arrival since 2010 is 18th March, 2 days earlier than the average from 1971 - 2009.

Well, the Daffs are out properly and the geese along the canal are nest building. Things are feeling distinctly more spring like.

On Wednesday I said that it felt like spring. There was that fresh 'smell' in the air, and the crocuses were through, the birds were announcing there availability, and it was light both when I set off in the morning, and when I got home in the evening. I went to bed, got up for a pee at about 4, looked out and the garden was clear. Got up at 6-45 to see 4" of snow cover everywhere, and still coming down heavy! The three roads into Leeds from our house were blocked, with vehicles. An artic wagon jack-knifed across one road, a gritter across another, and six buses stuck trying to get up the same hill I had trouble with the other day.

It had nearly all cleared by the following day though, but I get the feeling that winter hasn't done with us yet.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

We didn't get much on Wednesday, just enough for me to be able to say I got snowed on on the way to work. It'd have been nice to have got out on the river on Tuesday for a fish but with the levels as they are and it due t rain, it looks like my first session of the year will either be chasing jacks in a shallow lake or a session after the tinca's.

Just had a peek at the local river when i was detecting ,a little high but very coloured !not my idea of fun sitting on damp grass trying to keep your silhouette from the skyline ,better once the grass and weeds are 3 ft high

The resident Egyptian geese are rumoured to have chicks but i havnt spotted them yet and not spotted any canadian or pink footed chicks further up yet

Sounds like you're a couple of weeks ahead of the midlands. To be expected I suppose.

Being in a river valley means the hills either side take the brunt of weather but once it gets cold it lingers ,the pond once it freezes will stay frozen far longer that others taking the clubs anglers by surprise .

I am sure i spotted snow near alton on a shady bank thursday!

The last flower on a neighbours daffs has now wilted ,they came out at christmas because they still think the hedge that grew over them is still there
