At one time pretty much the only ink used to print bank notes was sold by the first company i worked for shuck mclean .

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Its far easier to curse the darkness than light one candle

:bleh: Giving them our money to grease a few palms for a smoother brexit. She says it'll be cheaper but we wont get the tax and NI our workers would pay, we won't get the corporation tax if they were made here and it could put British jobs at risk. :bones:

Patriotism is a dirty word in the British civil service and there are huge numbers of pampered middle class Champaign Socialists who go directly from university to relatively senior positions without ever having been exposed to a real job or indeed the day to day reality of working at the front line of the departments that they run.

They are almost exclusively pro-Europeans and look down upon those who rejected the EU with utter distain.

These are the people who tendered the contract.

These are the people who will have made this short sighted and insular decision that takes no account of the wider political landscape, the creation of and securing of British jobs that a UK contract would have represented, the costs of paying benefits to those not employed by a British printer or the public perception of government arising from a decision like this.

The be honest, I'd be surprised if this even got discussed with an elected politician other than arch remainer Amber Rudd.

Gemalto is a Dutch company and the world leader in secure document printing. If we are so good why isn't it a British firm in this position?

So would it have been better to pay 50M, 100M, 200M (depends who you listen to) so that they could be printed in UK?

I don't think anyone would have cared that much if it wasn't for all of the hype and gloating (see Daily Express) when it was announced.

Personally I'm not bothered either way, I don't care what colour my passport is. I just enjoyed the irony and let's not forget, there was never any need to change the colour in the first place, you could have kept your blue passport.

Gemalto are very good at what they do. So are De La Rue. My point was that there is a wider context to these decisions.

One assumes that the documents will not be printed at the Gemalto UK facility, not twenty miles fom me in Sedgensworth where they already make UK Driving Licences and other documents for the DVLA, does one not?
