Biters

The Flying Tench

Recommended Posts

Thanks everyone. In my case I don't think it's horse flies. There's no actual pain, just a small pink spot that itches when I get home. Certainly not as nasty as a Blandford fly. Maybe a mozzie?

As phone says, I am hesitant with fly repellant as if it gets on the hands it can also be fish repellent. Does anyone know if mozzie's can bite through clothing?

I once used a plastic folding chair the plastic version of the old seats you hire on the beach and one got me through it ,i know it did i wriggled as i felt it stick me and bent its pointy thing ,the bugger was on the other side of the chair pinned by its point!big bugger aswell !

I never found such stuff as jungle formula or autan had any effect on fishing (nor jungle formula wasp away either) never noticed a difference on catch rate pre or after application

This may lead to the culprits (or not)

You don't need to spray repellent on your hands anyway, just arms, legs & neck area.

No need to rub it in either - just spray on & dries it very quickly on its own & even a quick squirt in my receding hair, but not too much, as sweat running into your eyes with this stuff is unfunny.

A Scottish ghillie once told me that he used an Avon perfumed spray to keep the mossies away; and that it was a common mosquito repellent used by a lot of the ghillies up there in Scotland.

I never tried it myself though.

Avon "Skin-So-Soft", I believe they swear by. Never tried it.

I have Scottish highland midges in my garden here in Lancashire.

They are little *******s

Didnt you find it strange he wore a feather boa and minced across the moors lol

I have often wondered why african countries (or cases of blue tongue here) dont just put up big UV bug zappers anf fry mozzies and midges ,the contents could be used as protein for animals

If i sit outside even here i take my 20w one and its constantly zapping mozzies and midges ,in the case of africa perhaps malaria is a needed way of thinning out the less advantaged in society?

  • 1 month later...

I was out in the garden with my grandson the other day, when it felt like someone had pushed a sharp needle into my inner forearm. Looking down I saw a light green fly, about 4mm long, and maybe 2mm wide, attached. Instinctively I flicked it off, and saw there were two small lumps on my arm. They were red, then faded to white after a couple of hours. There's still a small white lump after 4 days. I've no idea what it was, anyone?

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Before you go fishing cover exposed areas of skin liberally with Germolene I have never been bitten on exposed skin when it has been applied.

Ensure that you wash your hand thoroughly after application so that you don't taint your baits.

Or indeed your Bits!! :bb:
