Timothy is saddly lacking in hay fields today ,most mass produced stuff is single variety unfortunately some even completely weed free .

The stuff the farmer i worked for sold hay but horse owners remarked their horses liked it better than competitors stuff and that was down to it containg timothy and other grass varieties and a lot of weed species.

I spent many hours pulling ragwort and digging dock so he could charge a quid or more extra lol

Theres hay and meadow hay and i guess meadow hay is declining ,its strange round here in the hundreds of acres of unkempt fields money isnt made selling hay its horse country as you can get!

Seen the price of the stuff? Eek!

Cory,

No more than 70% of an athletic horse diet can (should) be grain. They need roughage. I think Martin was just pulling my chain.

It was true however, no matter what was delivered the trainer paid for "hay".

Don't know if it is true but I was always told rye was horrible for a horse. Caused gas that accelerated the critter to the point of stumbling and breaking a leg (I was 11 or 12)

We didn't have a great deal of equines Phone, cattle, and sheep on the whole, but we did make hay and silage and grew barley, oats, and neeps (rutabaga to you) as winter feed.

Cory, I may have given the slightly wrong impression there.

Race Horses are fed Oats & Molasses near race days & Horse Nuts (Processed Horse feed) at other times + Grass & Hay when turned out into the field.

Ponies & Riding horses are almost Never fed Oats, which contains too much Energy for them.

Ahh well. I grew up surrounded by acres of Timothy and Italian Rye.

Have to say cory, never heard of Timothy as grass, save for being a male Christian name.

How many more males are named after plants??

Thought it was just a female thing, Daisy, Muriel (my Mam) etc.

Thats the trouble with mono culture ,field hay is vastly different to meadow hay nowadays
