Ideas for foreign trip

The Flying Tench

Recommended Posts

I keep telling myself I'll treat myself to a foreign fishing trip, but can never decide where to go. Any ideas? What I'm looking for is somewhere where I could enjoy fishing that is different and in some way better than what is available in UK. I'm not really a 'big fish' angler - carp, catfish, pike. It would be great to find really quality roach or rudd fishing, or big perch or maybe chub or bream.

I keep hearing of apparently amazing fishing - monster perch in Holland, I heard on AN of a carp lake in France full of 2lb rudd, but I can't remember where it was. The trouble is several things have to come together when you are new to an area. Fishing shop where you can get bait and tips as to where to fish. Not too difficult to get to. Somewhere to stay etc. Preferably more than one local venue to give a bit of variety

Has anyone been on a foreign trip where they enjoyed quality coarse fishing they could recommend to a generalist 'pleasure angler' such as me?

Apparently there is some great course/river fishing to be had in Croatia.

My wife & I are going there in October (Porec), but I'll be just wetting a line in the sea for a few hours a time.

Flight is only just over 2 hours & there's loads of tackle shops there. And plenty of places to get a License (which you'll need)

Safe to assume then that Roach & other silvers etc + Grayling will also be present to support the head of Pred's.

Nice ideas folks, but I was hoping someone could say 'I've actually done this, and it works.'

Steve, Holland certainly appeals, with it's huge perch, although I'm not sure I could afford a full-time guide. But the question is 'Where? What river, lake, town etc'

Coarse fishing in Brittany can be very good.

Easy to get to.

Bags of accommodation.

Tench, roach, bream fishing in ponds, lakes, canals and rivers and of course, the specimen lakes.

If the idea interests you let me know and I can get more specific and yes, I have tried it successfully.

I have fished the river Blavet near Pontivy and the Nantes/Brest canal in the same area Most local anglers only fish for Pike and Zander that they take for the pot, so very little coarse fishing going on, at least by UK standards.

The Blavet, reckoned at one time to be the best coarse river in France, is slow moving in this area. Access is good as it has a towpath all along one bank. You will need a licence to fish anywhere but in private lakes. Licenses are €10 a day or €30 a week, available online. I wouldn't fish without one as you are much more likely to be checked than you are in the UK.

Fishing fairly short sessions I have caught 50lbs of bream and roach without too much trouble. Bream to 5 1/2 pounds and Roach to one and a half pounds on simple cage feeder with worm maggot or sweetcorn on the hook. I also got broken more than one occasion by large carp. These are pretty much wild fish, probably never been caught and fight like crazy.
