Is it time for a digital bill of rights?

All,

Just curious? What makes anyone think they have a "right" rather than a "privilege" to digital matter. It seems to me any "right" would be a universal privilege. Or, as Chesters1 says, common law. That is to say, I cannot understand how it would be OK for the collective "you" and not OK for the collective "they" i.e. social media, banks, government, to have the same. I agree with the principle Chesters1 is implying. Common law vs Statute law. Right now common law prevails, if you are harmed you have the right of recourse. You are responsible for your own welfare. Statute law is for lazy uninformed citizens. We already have way to much stupid. Why compound that precedent?

You all know I am very liberal but even I have limits as to what I must assure you have. And, I'm not sure I want to be responsible for your internet ignorance. I mean, food, shelter opportunities for work, health, social discrimination (and others) - are fundamentals to life. I am responsible.

Please explain who "they" are? Please explain what you want from the "collective ME" as a segregated social group that requires a statute?

I posed it as a question but the decision made in March of this year by a federal court in New York essentially decreed that Twitter (and by extension other digital media platforms) is the modern equivalent of the public square.

That decision related to whether Donald Trump could block people but with that comes a whole slew of free speech issues.

There are also questions about access to information and political opinions.

In the UK, it's common for significant but politically sensitive news to be blocked by the mainstream media - very often related to inter-community tensions, Social media gets around that to some degree but only for those actively looking for the information.

There are also ways of shutting down political viewpoints:

Is it just me or are YouTube blocking or garbling almost every video relating to today's Brexit Betrayal Demonstration in London?

Od given that there are likely to be dozens of people trying to livestream this in addition to media coverage.

As if we needed more evidence were needed of mass censorship.

RUPTLY seem to be getting a feed out:

What surprised me though was that two video's that I know were posed yesterday no longer seem to be accessible on the creators channels.

Ken,

I actually believe you are eloquently making my point. Law, especially "common law" is not established in a particular time frame. Chit happens and eventually the laws subscribe to a particular behavioUr. The speed of light won't change with a "decree".
