The diet has started

It's quite amusing how much water I absorb if I eat a load of carbohydrates after a few weeks on a low carb diet. Glycogen storage carries a lot of water with it.

As we've already said, pie retention is a terrible thing.

Yep. I suspect there's also an element of bloating going on, I do seem to have digestive problems with wheat and pigging out on bread seems to give a larger temporary jump in weight than rice. Which is annoying, because I love bread and pasta, so sometimes I just take the hit.

I'm not ascribing much to it at the moment but I do tend to feel subtly "better" on a diet that's low in carbs. Not sure how much of that might be down to wheat though.
I like that satisfied high that you get from troughing on a plate of stodge as much as the next man but I may have to re-think the long term diet even after I've dropped my target 25-30kg.
I also need a more rounded movement/exercise program than the bike is giving me that my busted knees will stand - so probably not a return to high impact martial arts.

The low carb / high protein approach suits me, in that I enjoy that kind of food, it makes me feel full and it minimises the loss of lean tissue (which leads to yoyo dieting as it drops your BMR). And I don't miss the carbs, unless they are in front of me. Then, I can't resist and I end up bloated and with the squits.

All,

I have a barely related question. Ken, and others, post of loosing "25 - 30 lbs". Why isn't it appropriate to say "I have a target of two stones".

Phone

Because I used kilos.

We do use mixed up measurements in this country though and despite converting to the metric system almost half a century ago, we still buy clothing measured in inches, drink beer by the pint, measure speed and road distances in MPH/miles and perhaps most confusingly, until very recently, we used Celsius tor winter temperatures and Fahrenheit in the summer.

Some years ago, the weather spot on a news bulletin had to be postponed, When the embarrassed weatherman finally appeared, he apologised, giving as excuse

"We were celebrating Fahrenheit's birthday"

Loved it !

I think they still celebrate it at the Daily Mail. I doubt that anyone under 60 understands their forecasts.
