What a Guy!

I was somewhat overcome today by a workmate & fellow Angler to be Gifted - yes Gifted a Drennan 11 - 12 foot 6" Stillwater Feeder rod with 5 tips from his late father in law's massive collection.

He said he'd sort a decent rod for me, but wasn't expecting one as good as this!!

Anyone used this Rod??

Also a pair of very nice shin high lace up boots with a yellow trim (unbranded but have like an inner removable "boot shaped" sock)

He flatly refused to take anything for them :notworthy:

I have owned the same rod for many years Martin, top notch choice from light to 4oz tip for distance.

Great bite detection from light tip to the heaviest. I still use my 11foot medium feeder for tight to get at spots, I've had that rod for well over 20 years and its still going strong.

Thanks Andrew & Keith, I've been using the Drennan Red range 10 foot Carp feeder for the last 3 years or so - a good rod for the money (was about £40 at the time) but been finding that one a bit stiff, getting more hook pulls than I should & generally not that much fun to fish with.

I'm sure I'll get much more pleasure fishing the latest acquisition.

Im sure you will get a lot of pleasure using it Martin.

Martin correction I do have the same rod after all. I bought it when it first came out, and although it is the stillwater version I found it an excellent rod for Feeder fishing on the Thames and I remember coming third in an inter club match on the Thames using it with a nice catch of Chub.

I havent used it for quite a while now as Im rarely using feeders and Its been ages since I fished the Thames, but it is a great rod.

Heres a list of the Drennan rods that I have:

12ft 6in Drennan DRX Stillwater Feeder rod, (2 piece plus Quivers)

12ft Drennan IM6 1.25tc Specialist rod, (2 piece)

13ft Drennan Tench and Specialist Float rod, (2 piece plus handle extension)

13ft MKIV Drennan Tench Float rod, (3 piece)

13ft Drennan Acolyte Ultra Float rod. (3 piece)

Thanks Keith, mine is also the Stillwater version (per my original post) So then, what maketh a Stillwater rod?? Are the tips longer than those used for river fishing??

I'll be setting it up as a "Made Up" rod in a quiver with the heaviest tip supplied (2 & 1/2 oz) The bites are invariably vicious on the commies I fish & generally employ a 30 g Method feeder.

The other tips it came with are 3/4 oz, 1 oz, 1 &1/2 oz & 2 oz. Would you err on the 2 oz instead??. I'd appreciate your advise please & does the tip have much influence on how far you can chuck?? (obviously the 3/4 oz would be for "Light bomb" work - I get that bit)

I'm thinking now the 2 oz tip might tighten up nicer with a 30 g Feeder?? (we're talking Stillwater)

Thanks in advance.

Martin.

Nice gesture by your friend Martin. I used to have the DRX river leger rod, I forget what length it was but I think it was 12ft and hade several cracking tips with very bright tips.

I've just repainted all bar the 3/4 oz tip in White which shows up best against the water IMO.

Martin, I just dug out my Drennan DRX Feeder rod, which I havent used for many years and to my surprise it was the River version not the Stillwater version that I have (see pic).

I also took a pic of the reverse side with all its specs printed on it for you to compare your Stillwater DRX Feeder with and find any diffences (see pic)

930-A6-FB1-1-BD1-40-B3-9-D7-B-B598884280

Length 3.9 Metres (12ft 10in)

Approx Line Guide : 3lb to 6lb reel lines : 2lb to 4lb hook lengths

Ave casting weights: 10grm to 70grm

Fast Taper Glass tips: 3/4oz : 1oz : 1-1/2oz : 2oz

I also have another quivertip besides the four that are listed above, but I think I might have bought this 5th tip separately.

All of the quivertips are a little under 25ins in length.

Im only guessing but the river version might have a slightly faster taper in its blank and/or its tips than the Stillwater version to allow for the extra strength currents that are often present in a river.

I remember it being a great feeder rod in use, and I think you should like your stillwater version too.
