It brought back memories of this, I remember going over to see the devastation.

I wonder what's the French equivalent of 'Blue Peter'?

I see Trump gave a well thought out piece of advice, 'bomb' it with aerial water tankers.

The reply from the French was , ' that could bring the whole structure down'!

My dad and his mate installed the roofing system that covered York minster after the fire.

It was (at the time) unique in that sections could be slid aside to allow crane access and then immediately moved back to protect from the weather.

I also have a mate who is friends with he current arch-bishop.

Strangely enough though, although I used to travel through York regularly, I've never visited.

All,

There must be a God. Reading the story this morning donations are pouring in.

Some of the more notable:

L’Oreal 200 million euros ($226 million)

François-Henri Pinault and his family more than $113 million

Bernard Arnault and his LVMH luxury goods and fashion house $226 million.

Appearently it doesn't even touch the smaller donations value.

All for a $6 million renovation.

Thankfully the main structure and most of the artworks inside were saved. Will take years to repair, but there are still specialist carpenters and masons etc around with the "olde worlde" skills to bring it back to the way it was.

Lets hope the task is put in the hand of European and particularly French artisans.

While I have no doubt that the skills exist in places like India and much of the work could be outsourced and undertaken at a lower price, the optics would be better if the French rebuilt their own cathedral.

No doubt our pathetic government will be chipping in to macrons appeal ,did france put their hands in their pockets when we were rebuilding several of our cathedrals after ww2 ?

Why pay to rebuild it at all either their god does it or the church should they seem to gain from the god trademark

It seems to be a fuss over very little but france could make a great deal of leverage if it was "discovered" it was set on fire by a moslem ,no problems getting rid of those they may not like and little public protest

On the other hand perhaps it was burn deliberately by macron himself to save france coughing up the huge bill to repair the semi derelict chunk of rotten stone and wood ,more money to put in his offseas bank account?

I vant see how it could ever be declared safe after rebuilding fire and stone are not good for each other

The argument from personal incredulity.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

There are plenty of stonemason and carpenters in France. You can hava stone built new-build in France if you have the dinero. There are penty of carpenters too. Most French houses even new builds have full roofs. The French don't go in much for prefabricated struts made from old fish-boxes.

Outsourcing is not much of a thing in France. The French are not cheapskates. What has any of this got to do with the science of optics?
