Come on, you're not that much older than me...

In this case "optics" relates to the way that an action or event is viewed by the community or outsiders:

Having the cathedral rebuilt by the French = good optics.

Having the continent's "new Europeans" gloating and laughing about the fire on social media = bad optics.

People with the sort of names that were expelled from western Europe in 1609 - although they did try to come back again via a different route for a sight seeing trip to Vienna in 1683.

Don't forget, just a few years ago French stonemasons, architects et al built a medieval castle from scratch, using only techniques available centuries ago. I'm sure many of the people who worked on the castle will be employed in the rebuilding of Notre Dam. Plus they'll help to bring up another generation of craftsmen helping on the project.

Five years seems too short a time though, I'm saying more like 10 years minimum to finish all the work. After all, work is still going on at York Minster after it suffered a fire over 10 years ago.

Surely the place was insured?.....WTF do they want donations ffs!

I can't remember the French, or any other country donateing any money to the uk when there's been a problem here.

The cost to repair the place wouldn't even dent the Popes wallet!

I wonder who set the place on fire....pretty obvious!

Pretty crude stonework though compared to the intricacies of spires etc

I did watch some of the program the gist was it was being rebuilt using medieval practices (i think) theres no need in reality the stonework could be cut using modern machinery or they would be at it for decades!
