Season start washout

The rivers are rising and a week of rain is predicted.
Looks like I'll be finding a pool to fish at the start of the season.

In the last couple of weeks I can only remember 2 or 3 days without rain, mostly drizzle with occasional torrential downpours. I've been watching the local river levels with an eye to the opening of the river season, and surprisingly, it's not looked too bad, in fact after a sharp rise over the weekend, they are fining off nicely. We now have a forecast of a months rain over the next couple of days, but I'm still hopeful that they will be at a fishable level by Sunday.

My main concern is the damage to spawn and fry from the early spawners, as well as the usual influx of 'undesirables' from the ill placed, overstocked, catching pools that abound in this area.

The upper Severn is now rising rapidly, so the middle Severn will likely be in full flood for opening weekend.

I've seen a couple of carp in the middle part of the river but I've never caught one - probably because the valley sides are fairly steep and there aren't many pools close to the river. There are more pools below Stourport where the river starts to take on a more lowland characteristic and I suspect that a few of the unstoppable fish that I hooked back in my match fishing days (and one hooked on a whip while catching livebaits) were escapees.

I am however hearing rumours of foreigners of the whiskered variety in addition to the big one that was caught at Ripple a few years back..

 

I suspect that my first river foray of the season will be the Stour because it recovers so quickly and I have my eye on a spot that definitely has potential to turn up a good fish or three.

Just clocked my local rivers and I was amazed to see they're spot on, that's despite raining solid all day, and it still is!

Lots of rain to come though so maybe it will fall on the catchment areas, which will without doubt cause a rapid rise in levels, not good for newly layed eggs, or freshly hatched fry.

I looked again next day and they where high as kites and rattling through.

I think i'll be hanging fire until better conditions develope!

The Missouri River is expected to return to its banks in NOVEMBER

My local river the Aire, is not looking too bad...yet, and I'm still hopeful for Sunday. I have a plan B though, a stretch of river, with a large canal next to it, just in case.

The Severn is currently at 3.66m and rising.

At this time of the year, the river should be at about the 19cm mark.
