Cyclists riding no-handed

Taxation perhaps not but certainly insurance and a registration plate ,about 3 ft square should do it ,theres a 50/50 chance it maybe help in windy conditions as a sail.we Need obvious ways of identifying individual bikes so they can be punished for breaking the rules other road users have to follow !

I have a better idea. Be like Holland. In town centers, the priority is pedestreians, then bikes then motor vehicles, but that would not do in the UK because cage drivers think they are oh so special and that they own the roads.

There is no such thing as "Road Tax",

Indeed there is not. Quite irrelevant. I didn't mention it. I said cyclists should be road-taxed. Ie pay cess to the Revenue for riding a cycle on a public road NOTE THE USAGE OF THE LOWER CASE here and in the original post.. What the official name for this tax might be matters not a flying flicker What matters even less in this context is what taxes are levied on other road users, or what pettifogging names such taxes have. It is a politician's trick to try to change the subject and/or quibble about semantics, but it won't work here.

A tax, cess or impost on anyone who rides a cycle on the road and a swingeing fine if they ride one where they should not, - like shopping malls, railway platforms, pavements, kiddies playgrounds, etc. -clear enough ?

The"Think Bike" campaign is for motorcyclists.

Does that mean you think pedal-cyclists are fair game ?

I regard "bike" as applying to anything with two in-line wheels (the clue is in the original name BI-cycle)

True, a motorised idiot-cyclist is an even greater hazard than one using pedal-power

Cory,

I am not "pro-bike" - any of them.

You say, """. . . in the UK because cage drivers think they are oh so special and that they own the roads""". Frankly, that's exactly what I believe. By what right or benefit do you use my roads. The ones built and paid for by my taxes for the express purpose of accommodating "cage drivers".

May I also say I've yet to meet a cyclist who wasn't holier than thou when it comes to using public property. A preponderance of bikers I have dealt with are total dip-chits> (jdressed like clowns with a $40 water bottle).

I could be wrong.

Roads in the UK are funded from general taxation so anybody who pays tax funds the roads not just car drivers so by that right cyclists have the same right to use the roads as car drivers and with the exception of motorways they were not built expressly for the use of "caged drivers".

As for the holier than thou attitude yes some cyclists are a55holes but there are a considerably larger number of car drivers who fit that bracket if for no other reason than there are more of them using the roads than cyclists.

Yes , I'll drink to that, it fits with that great American trout fisher's; (John Geirach's) sagacious quote.

Snakey,

Your proportionality doesn't hold water for cyclists IMO. Let them voluntarily designate their pittance of road tax allocations to "cycle paths". Indeed, roads are designed and built for "cage drivers" and the funding is overwhelming. Your logic does make sense however. Cyclists don't mind using the grass in parks, walking paths, sidewalks, using the wrong side of the roadway, or other public areas to suit themselves. They are entitled.

Of course, the a-holes are among both. However percent of cyclists breaking the law as a percentage of users is equally overwhelming.

Most "cage drivers" actually drive by using some common sense. You stay on your side of the road as a matter of mutual trust. For some arrogant reason common decency does not apply if you own a $40 water bottle and a clown suit.

Particularly annoying are the ones that use the crease between the lane and edge or the road or the edge of the centerline

As stated previously in the UK there is no "road tax" and the closest thing VED is based on emissions so electric vehicles are exempt as are bicycles, so the roads are funded equally from central taxation by anybody who pays tax road users or not (even pedestrians help fund them if they pay tax) so caged drivers funding is not over whelming and equally if you check statistics there are far more car drivers who break the law than cyclists. As for the arrogance that is plain to see in car drivers as easily as it is in cyclists, the turds who merrily use their phones while driving despite it being against the law, who shoot red lights at crossings, including the w@nker who nearly hit me today when he decide a red light didnt mean stop to him despite it being on a level crossing over a train track (it's just a pity the train hadn't quite got to the crossing). Those who constantly speed (especially past schools) and those who park illegally in front of schools because they're too lazy and/or fat to walk an extra five yards. car drivers who fail to give the correct amount of clearance when passing cyclists and try and force you into kerb.redirecting my tax to pay for more cycle lanes would be a great idea except for the fact that a lot of the time they're blocked by arrogant car drivers who park in them.

I could of course lump all car drivers together but there are good and bad in all walks I have come across a good number of courteous drivers who follow the highway code, obey the law and are pleasant to other road users but sadly nowadays they seem to be outweighed by the arrogant, self righteous and overly entitled car drivers who think they own the road and any common sense they have you could fit in a match box without taking the matches out first.
