flathead catfish

All,

One of the favorite catch and keep for the table species is the flathead catfish. This one went into a pond to clean out the 4 - 6 inch carp that came in during flooding.

48 inches - 54 pounds caught by my grandson early morning 6/29

Congrats to the lad.

Do you have to train them to take out specific fish, if so, could we borrow a few hundred of them to get rid of some of the nuisance crap over here?

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

He's not going to clear out the carp on his own. Get him some friends, maybe a couple of Alligator gar.

All,

First things first.

Chesters1 - that's a pen light - is a soddy like a mud brick shack? Kansas has a lot of sod and mud brick homes still standing - although not livable.

Gozzer, Yes, flatheads are trainable. This fish will parish. It is in a pond that will dry up by next summer. It will probably weigh in the 70's. The purpose is to reduce the stench of the dead carp. A couple of Ken's gar will do the trick as well.

Ken, I live out of the range of Alligator gar - Longnose gar are a dime a dozen and they get to 30 40 lbs and can eat their weight daily

I was surprised at how far north the original range of Alligator gar existed prior to their apparent extirpation by anglers - certainly as far north as southern Illinois - and they are being re-stocked.
Probably best not to introduce them outside their original range though.

I have to say that "eat their weight daily" sounds like a regurgitation of the old nonsense that was used to justify their removal as "trash fish".

All,

Yes, my bad - few creatures can "eat their weight daily". I'm sure for gar - it is a wives tale.

Ken, the Alligator gar were killed indiscriminately for the hell of it. Loss of spawning areas is the primary downfall for these critters. The southern tip of Illinois is still pretty much the boundary. My only encounter was accidental from the lower Mississippi river. 83 lbs and returned.

My best was just over 40lb. Quite a sight when they come up head first slashing that mouth full of teeth from side to side.

Just noticed your comment about the pond drying up. Sounds like you have a job for a digger/backhoe.

Ken,

These small lakes or ponds are called Oxbows. The post flood ones last a year maybe two. We do have several along the river that are maintained as parks and recreation areas. The one nearest me has a reputation for Bighead Carp (not carp at all, Asian carp). I suspect many went back into the river during flooding. The stock takes 4 -5 years to build back. In Missouri I believe the record is about 100lbs. My PB probably 40+
