The river Colne downstream of London Colney (for about a mile) has been completely drying out every summer for many years now, but it hasnt always been like that.

The upper river Lea from Hertford through wheathamstead and even further up is just a trickle compared to what it used to be (even during the winters); and even further downstream where the river expands is badly silting up and becoming a ghost of its former self.

The river Ver used to carry barges bringing goods upstream from London to St.Albans back in Roman times but is just a very shallow stream these days and it gets worse year on year.

Thats just 3 local chalk streams out of many suffering in Hertfordshire and theres more all across the Home Counties that have been ruined because of abstraction over the years and the raping of the water aquifers that feed them; and the unwillingness of the water companies to build a reservoir instead of relying on getting all their water from the dwindling aquifers.
