Twas really an easy decision to let them go, I've all the reels I need to see me out.

Nice to see them go to a good home & for them to be used again in anger. :fishing:

I can tell from meeting him, Andy will look after them for me.

Especially the 300 with all the paint chips Andy - that one was my late Dad's , the best thing is the knowledge it'll be used again. That'll celebrate his life just right!!

Enjoy with my pleasure Bud'.

Fixed Spools were at first called "Casting Reels".

I remember them as that when they first started to gain popularity.

Do you remember rod rests being called idle backs?

If all else fails, follow the intructions.

They're the ones. Although the top one at 0.99 is the type I use the most for general non centrepin fishing.

Made to last, simple to service, and reliable. Never had one lock up on me under pressure.

Really struggling to downsize image enough to upload here.

Never used open auctions as a guide use sold listings and then remember if two bidders really really want a reel the price will be far above another one the next day bid on by the loser if hes alone

And collectors are not after run of the mill versions going cheap they want boxed ones in mint conditions ,the only time they buy poor condition reels is the time they are so rare you grab one to tick a box then hope you can get a better one later or prototypes or limited run reels that worth grabbing at any cost or condition

As to the name we call them "reels" or if pushed fixed spool reels ,we dont call a cat a tiger to give the impression its different from what it is lol

I have a couple of hundred intrepids that are worthless so not sold on but kept for parts or bought as part of a bundle just to get a particular one i want

As to americans not collecting them (wink)

Phone, any reel with a wire Bale arm (AKA line pickup in the posher echelons) was colloquially called a casting reel especially oop North when they first become popular & affordable!!.

I believe they're still called Egg Beaters in Oz.

  • 1 year later...

Hi Andy, (sorry I called you Dave at first) Long time since I saw you but would you consider taking me out for a bit of shotgun shooting??

Clays is all I'd want to do - but Pigeons etc also OK. Pick me up & fetch me back. I'm really Air Rifles & like to think I'm something of a Marksman.

Maybe pick me up when getting the Lads Dog??

£100 all in?? (Negotiable)

As readers of "Angling Vagabond" will know, my first reel I made myself in 1942 (aged eight)?

Yrs, others were skeptical when I wrote about it back around 2002, so I persuaded the 9 year old son of a friend to make a replica (First I had to teach him how to saw straight and how to drill straight, and how to drive in a nail straight - whatever primary schools taught in 2002 seemed of little practical use) With a little help, he succeeded.  Coupled with a rowan rod the oufit caught plenty of tench including four and five pounders for both of us. It was written up with illustrations for Freshwater Informer at the time.  But that's for another thread - back to Mitchells

I bought my first Mitch in 1960, when I left school.  £6-17=6d  the best part of my first three weeks wage;  It had a claw pick-up and I still have it.   I have since used many other fixed spools, centre pins, closed-face, spin casters, bait casters and mulipliers.

Tackle dealers will hate me , but the truth  about expensive reels and rods is very often -

Its not the rod or reel that counts  - its the angler behind it

Yes, given a choice, it's nice to use the "best" tool for the job. but having fished in some out-of the way places, (eg Amazon Basin, Aussie outback, Southern Ocean, Okavanga delta) one can come across an unexpected situation, hundreds of miles from the nearest tackle dealer.  When you have to improvise with just the gear you have with you, it's amazing what the "wrong"  rod and reel can be made to achieve

Yep' Vaga's - the breaking strain of the line is actually more about the breaking point of the Angler's patience!!! (Snags etc permitting)
