There are a few absentee chaps that also come to mind, Sportsman in France and Captain Cojonos in Spain to name two.

Sporty would have put blame on the NHS management for some of the mess its in ,i think he was involved in the NHS in some way

Capatain disapeared long before sporty ,my favourite was loonyl ,never cottoned on if he was mad or just good at it lol

Bloody hell chesters, I never took you for a tackle tart, I don't think I've owned that many rods in my 60yrs of dangling!

John.

PS, the Woolies rod is a redish brown colour, I think they did them in a 9ft version as well as the 10'-6".

Yes i think mine is an accidental mid sized one!

Most of the rods were to sell on and bought cheap but sending them now more expensive than the rod itself ,some are for the intrepid collection and a few old timers i bought new (mostly the abus) the blue matches long gone ,i keep wanting to buy them again but luckily resist it but i still use a glass PDQ 14'6 rod most outings i dont get on with carbon it just doesnt cast right

Thats the tip of the iceberg ,i blame not having anything my own except fishing tackle (nasty smelly stuff mum insisted was kept in the shed) anything else was burnt the second time i never put it away ,and pangs of gnawing cramps being so poor not eating for a couple of days made me stockpile food aswell .

Thats my excuse but i think as you get older you crave what you had younger ,thats my second excuse

Sportsman is still around, I've seen him posting on MD, when I've been browsing angling forums. I looked up Captain Cojones, and he hasn't been on here since 2013!  I was surprised at that, because he helped me when my daughter decided to go on a holiday to Peru, and up the Amazon, on her own. She had some trouble at a Spanish airport, he worked in the media, and kept me informed as to the situation at the time. There are loads of names that spring to mind when I start to think back over the years, many left when the forum got too political about Brexit. They just got fed up of the whole thing and decided they'd had enough. It's a shame, because it used to be a really good forum, and MD, and FM are still going strong. Perhaps AN had too high an average age, and it didn't appeal to the commercial carp followers.

All,

We all do it different. I'lll get to my first 80 years in another post.  My rod and reel story will find an appropriate slot right here.

Early in my fishing life everything was home-made, willow and coke bottle reels wound with cotton/silk line that cost half a dollar for about 50 - 75 yards.  The next phase was post college and I couldn't buy expensive enough toys. the next 30 or so years I bought and used Uglystik rods and Zebco reels.  100's if not over a 1000.I supplied rod reel and end kit for youth learning sessions. I began those years whilst fishing and traveling. I had concerns for the environment in those days, zebra mussels, trout whirling disease, carp V?? and a host of others i.e.algae. I thus never used a rod and reel in separate waters  even in the same state.  I never failed to find some kids that thought it was Christmas. My last few years I sort of went back to the more expensive and marked the water the rod and reel could be used in.

I'm sure I've had any number of oddballs, like the old square steel (started with an "S") but the rod you all will get a chuckle out from was bought on 9/11/2002. We were fishing a carp tournament at Niagara Falls when the twin towers were felled but had no clue. Out of the blue I purchased a Globetrotter rod from the chap himself.  Can't say I ever caught a fish on that unwieldy bast-rd.

You could be right but the instantaneous sites like facebook and twitter (dont like them they wont let me delete stuff to look at it like i want it to be) certainly have hit forums

They still have their places theres some excellent collectors ones not on any other fishing ones ,i did stick my head in a couple and left and tried to join traditional angling but never got a reply so this is my home !its just down sized with a couple of closed off wings ,hopefully they get lodgers again but even the carp one turned clichy its a shame but ineveitable i suppose

Making stuff (that usualy broke first time out) was part and parcel of our closed season you could smell the new season approaching ,that strange musty water smell when you popped by just before it began.

As a kid my gear was all hand downs ,old worn out crap given when an uncle got a new bit of kit (our family was from deptford and pretty thick back then but the place was destroyed in the 60's by development and most went to kent ,londowners did that!) Then i bought bits to build rods from walkers hythe with so so results but it taught you to respect your gear then as i started work at 15 money could be used to buy better stuff as is the case with most back then

I'm amazed anyone gets a call from their kwack!

Trying to contact a kwack round here is like getting through to the queen.  I think they're all hiding out ....can't say as I blame 'em though lol.

Regarding this virus thing, I feel as though we are not being told the what's really going on!

So many names come to mind over the years Gozzer, I left AN for a while mainly because of the Brexit thread but came back for reasons now unknown! That being said I have enjoyed today’s chat of various subjects without the input of a certain minority and hopefully if it continues others may come back and we can enjoy a form of socialising whilst not socialising.

I walked into woolies one day with a fair amount of cash from potato picking in the summer hols and they were selling off all their fishing gear cheap, I got a load of big lures and a wire trace making kit and set about pike fishing at the brickyard in Gunville, I was testing one of the lures by chucking it out a few yards to get a measure of how fast to retrieve it whilst standing in the water and a pike hit the lure right at my feet! I CRAPPED MYSELF and pulled the rod up so high and fast the pike went airborne and then fell off. That was when I got hooked on pike fishing excuse the pun.

Wait until you're 70 Ian, they're never seem to be off the bloody phone.:D

We all got texts the other week saying that we need to order any scripts on line, and that we had to phone in to register. I spent the best part of three hours over a couple of days trying to get through, and only got to register when they rang to see if I needed any help!
