Rear drag reel service

Has anyone got any experience of servicing the drag on a rear drag reel please?

I have a few reels where the drag has become rather 'jerky' and not at all smooth and with so much time on my hands wondering if it was possible to service the drag? (Shakespeare Mach 3 by the way)

I've searched online but can't find any instructions that are relevant so any advice/help gladly accepted.

Thanks in advance

John

Your best bet is to use a camera and take pictures as you take it apart .

Theres precious little information on modern reels some dont even have a schematic on the box any more

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

I have serviced the rear drags on my ABU Cardinals 54 & 55 for years and they are not difficult but I did have the diagrams at first. Your reel diagram should be  available online somewhere, try Google or Jim's reels.  You may wish to upgrade the drag washers for Carbontex  as they are smoother.

curious - Do they even make a rear drag any  longer ?

Yes they do Phone, and they don’t cause the spool to drop off when you’ve unscrewed the drag a little too far like some of the front drag models do, especially on the cheaper models ?

I like using front drags when I’m using lighter lines because I think they’re a bit more sensitive, but I prefer having a rear drag when I’m often consistently changing the drag setting (out of choice) when I’m playing a particularly heavy and hard fighting fish around snags, but that’s just a personal choice of mine.

BoldBear,

Thanks, - - does a new rear drag reel go by the same name? (Shakespeare Mach 3). I too use the drag as a tool.  Because of our differences in venue circumstances I have used "spincast" reels for years. 75 meters of line is a LOT over here. A long cast is maybe 30 meters
