Deadbaits for chub

The Flying Tench

We used to supply Turkish crayfish from our lake to a local university who were studying a way to get rid of them without damaging any other creatures or fish in the lake, however we never heard from them again so we assumed that they must have been unsuccessful.

CHESTERS1,

Only if you wish to read it - I DID (as well as 3 more).  Not a cut and dried topic - surprised me.

Hard reading its strangely set out with bullet point type face!? Trouble is with these 'research' papers is they are totally unnatural ,in a tank the water will be at the temperature of the lab ,it wont be circulating as it does in lakes and the subjects unable to naturally  wander about to what maybe more or less dens!y populations of the bacteria so the results only applicable to the experiment not reality ,the sentence mentioning a 50% water change after feeding is also weird ,is that rain water ? Straight from the tap whatever it is the crayfish wont like it its another unatural occurrence   which may effect the outcome.eating peas isnt exactly natural either perhaps they committed suicide refusing to eat them ?

They obviously die of something perhaps crayfish have a tolerance to their own plague but once numbers rise in a pond its starts effecting them because the bacteria number rises above what they can stand and they die off? If the bacteria only live on crayfish? if they start dying the bacteria levels will fall and the crayfish numbers rise again ,the age old foxes and rabbits diagram

Unfortunately taking this (or any)'research' at face value is like excepting adverts for products telling you it kills 99.9% of bacteria without telling you how that result was achieved ,you maybe wasting that money because just spraying it willy nilly does nothing perhaps in the lab the bacteria died after sitting in it for a month ,so yes it did kill them but how isnt mentioned because money comes before truth?

Chesters1,

I agree, my example left a lot to be desired. What is conspicuously missing is the answer to the original and rather simple question - when, how and who causes crayfish to die. The most telling conclusion, although not set in stone, is that all species do not molt at the same time. The signal crayfish ARE susceptible to to the same pathogens but much less vulnerable. SIGNALS are the problem but the research never quit says that. It's round and round the pond we go.
