Crucians - float or ledger?

Hi Anderoo, nice to see you back again

Keith

I second that.   re  crucians. I don't think it matters much what set-up you use as long as it is sensitive , I use tiny peacock quills (Elton sent me a bunch years ago) attached by  cycle valve rubber top and bottom, dust shot close to hook, weighted so about eighth of an inch float showing - that will show a lift or a "gozunda" bite equally well.

I discovered early in life that crucians will hold the bait in their mouths without moving any part of the rig (so when you lift out to check the bait -surprise surprise, there's a crucian on!)  So it pays to give a gentle strike every few minutes - where I used to fish you got a few extra crucians that way.     Best bait for me were tiny red worms, but most baits will catch..  If you have any influence on fishery management - please discourage stocking of ANY form of goldfish - brown, wild, fantailed, longtailed, gold, silver or what have you, in your crucian water or the purity of your crucian stock will be compromised

They can be oh so delicate on the float but honestly you get some tearing runs on the bolt rigs...!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Caster can be a killing bait - I turn all my own Casters from Maggots, therefore having control of the colour & all sinkers.

I try to make mine an almost dark Ruby red, but still sink. Being on the crunchy side means the hook goes in without bursting them.

OK, so it takes a bit of time & mind numbing tedium but beats the hell out of "Shop Bought" when many are just drowned maggots!! (& dearer)

I've nearly 2 pints on the go as writing this - Another day or 2 will see them all done. (Bagged into 1/2 pints as I go along & frozen)

I haven't been able to target crucians for years due to a lack of venues with them present, but yesterday, I was talking to a chap fishing a local park lake, and he was telling me that there is a good head of them present - and he's recently had up to four in a session with fish to 2lb.

I feel a session coming on...

I caught 41 Lb of smallish Barbel & Carp (about the same of each) last Sunday in a match at Tollerton (Heron Lake) under my feet on just 1/2 a pint of Casters including feeding from the same 1/2 pint & still brought some back.

I did feed a (very) few pellets & a handful of Maggots also to be fair!!

CORRECTION

Oh dear, must be getting old - although I use PEACOCK quills for many purposes, for crucians I use (and meant to write) PORCUPINE quills - sorry if I misled anyone.
