Dog biscuits on the top

Recommended Posts

I used to fish for carp this way, and in those days the recommendation was to use Pedigree Chum Mixer. But things have changed in the dog food market. I think the equivalent now would probably be Pedigree Dry Adult Dog Mixer. Or do you have any other suggestions (for carp and chub)?

Also, does anyone have experience of using smaller size dog biscuits for roach and rudd?

I use Bakers Complete.

They're fairly large, but there is a puppy version. They come in chicken or beef flavours, and you don't need a band or hair because you can just push the hook through them - which means you can keep a little bag of them in the tackle box and fish with them if there are fish on the surface, without needing any specialist gear at all..

A kilo box is a couple of quid from almost any supermarket.

Thanks, Ken. I have just bought a 'small adult' pack.

As you say, being able to put a hook through them sounds a great help.

They go soft after a few minutes in the water, and I've never had any issues with the hook not puling through the bait and into a fish.

I've never liked using dog buiscuites and always use bread.  You can choose whatever size of bread you want to and it goes nice and soft and is easy for the fish to engulf.

Bread is great in close, but it's difficult to guarantee that a bait will survive casting and still float if it's cast any distance and putting freebies out at range is difficult too.

I have pretty much switched over to Bakers for those reasons, because it is fine for months in my tackle bag, and because it's less likely to attract unwanted attention from waterfowl than bread.

I've used Cat Biscuits with some success, especially those Fish shaped ones so the pellet band fits nicely around the middle part & won't come off until You take it off.

They're small ('Cos they're for Cats) & will catch almost any good size surface feeding Fish.

I use a band on a hair and when attatched like that you can cast pretty much as far as you are able to and the bread stays on the hook and floats no problem.  As I said, bread would be my choice over buiscuites.

Martin, interesting you haven't just had carp. What other species have you had on cat biscuits?

Just Carp - Big & small so far, I only fish commercials these days but can still see the potential for Chub on the river!!

Sadly a thing of the past for me for health reasons.

Caster still takes some whacking!!
