Hemp and tares for roach in summer

The Flying Tench

Recommended Posts

I had a crack this afternoon (warm and sunny) in the club still water. Up in the water, tares on the hook. The roach were onto the tares immediately. In fact, at the start, when I was still shotting the float, and there was no bait on the hook, I was getting bites! Presumably they were taking the shot. So it was bite a chuck, but they weren't good bites, they were playing around with it, and I only had half a dozen fish in a couple of hours. It didn't seem so bad when the sun was behind a cloud, so I must try again at dusk or on a cloudy day.

I used to fish Roundhay Park Lake in Leeds till Dusk with Bread, 45 odd years ago.

Size 10 with Bread on the float, (they didn't want to know during the day)

Before the Druggies & Arseholes took over!!

I went again today, early evening, and did much better. They were still fast, tricky bites, but I upped the hook size from 16 to 14, and had a much better hook-up rate as a result. In two hours I had 23 roach and one rudd, up to half a pound or just over.

We had one summer when I was a teenager when we absolutely murdered the roach in the park lake on hemp and tares. We fished short poles to hand using tiny pole floats with spherical bodies and cane stems and just a few #10 down the line. Bites were on the drop and often hooked themselves against the elastic. The fish were a better stamp than we got on maggot.

Never fished it since!

Hi,I've caught many, many large bags of fish on hemp and tares,on virtually any water that holds a decent head of roach, fast, slow, still, canals, the lot,on the GtOuse,Trent,Thames I have caught big bags of chub and roach,50lb plus bags of roach an all of these rivers,I suggest you use small shot,no.8's or smaller,in small bulks and individual droppers, starting on or near ths bottom with a slowish fall, but they do come right up so be aware, often fishing 3ft deep or less with one no.10 down is lethal, hook sizes on tare would normally be 16/18,but I've caught well at times on a 12,I hope this is some help...
