Replacing Rod Handle Covering

Just looking for some input. I have replaced rod handle covering in the past with cork and, more recently, with Duplon. I always whipped the butt with wool and then glued the Duplon over the top. Not that much of an issue but, using Evo Stick or similar, the adhesive eventually peels away. Anyway, I have decided to fit a screw type reel seat to my old faithful rod together with some new Duplon. I am going to use five minute epoxy for the reel seat but really need advice as to what other adhesives any of you use for attaching the Duplon?

Hi Chris,

I’m no expert and I haven’t fitted or replaced any Duplon handles; only Cork handles using araldite when I’ve been building a rod; but someone should come along who can help you soon. you just have to be a little patient as some only visit the forum now and then, their usually either fishing or working ?

Hi Chris, you can still use EVO STICK for the Duplon handle, then use "Shrink Tube" over the top.

Order the shrink tube diameter a bit oversize (maybe 4 or 5 mm bigger) Then when in position, hold it over a steaming kettle. (I used the steaming kettle - Not a heat gun which can be a bit severe.

Closer the fit, the less heat required!!. (Just think Putting Loose/Slack Socks On)

Kettle works just fine.

I wish someone would invent shrink tube that had a ' zip' the handle on one of my detectors is just plastic fine when its dry but its difficult to keep a grip on when sweaty or wet. That shrink tube would have been great but the handle gets a big step where it joins the stem so you cant slide it on .i had to use that bike handle bar wrap ,its a little thick once overlapped but it better than nothing

Had shrink tube been flat then somehow fastened to itself to form a tube it would have many more uses ,soon soon!

You might try some Foam Pipe Lagging Dave, It's split along the length. Just tape Top, Middle & Bottom so Foam works for grip, & forgiving for varying diameters.

I've only used Duplon a couple of times. It was a tight fit and I just secured it against the real seat at one end and the winding check at the other, with both secured with a tiny amount of epoxy.

I don't really like the feel of Duplon in the wet, and much prefer either natural cork or the EVA artificial cork that can be ordered from China.

Just how big do you think my hands are!

I thought about it but the handle is ' ergonomically ' shaped so the circumference quite big ,though about thinner foam but holding it together a problem and i dont like putting glue on it if its going to be sold on after i die for my youporn premier subscription debts. Shrink tube on the exposed metal poles the stuff for wrapping 18650 batteries works a treat hopefully as its been wrapped since the first day it will look mint unwrapped

Hi all. I think I'll just stick (please pardon the pun) with the method I've used for many years. Whip the butt with wool, to create a snug fit for the handle covering if needs be, and good old Evo Stick to secure in place. I don't like the idea of shrink tubing. Just my preference. I did order, and still have a couple of lengths of EVA artificial cork from China, but the bore is far too small. Not enough to be reamed out unfortunately. This would've been ideal for this job. Never mind. Back to the drawing board!

Just an update. Have successfully replaced the handle covering on the rod. Got some replacement Duplon from The Tackle Box, used some good old fashioned masking tape to wrap the butt first and then some spray adhesive to attach the Duplon from Wilko. Far batter than the adhesive in a tube. Thanks for your advice peeps.
