Line colours

Braid is actually banned as a reel line on nearly all of the waters that I've fished over the last ten years, although you can still use slightly thicker braid as a hook length on a lot of them.

The two main reasons for this is because it parts too easily on snags because of its lack of abrasion resistance compared to mono, and it's ability to cut the mouths of heavier fish due to its thin diameter and lack of stretch.

Yes a lot of us coarse anglers do use fluorocarbon line for some of our hooklengths; and price doesn’t seem to be that relevant.

Getting around braid bans for light/UL lure fishing is easy. Just use Fireline. It's not braided, so it gets past most rules. The only problem is finding the real thing because it's fake city out there.

It's a bit thicker than most braids but on the positive side, it is much less prone to wind knots with light lures.

Used Maxima for over 50 years and had no problems. mainly straight through with no hooklength

Me too !  Not only that but some of the line I have on bulk spools was bought over thirty years ago.  Provided your line is stored where it is cool, dry and dark there is no reason it should deteriorate.   I cut off the last few inches of line  at the end of each trip  and replace the reel line once it is markedly too short (that takes years, not months)  Before Maxima my "go to" freshwater line was Luron - anybody else remember that ?

Thanks all. I've had a few sessions since my return and they've all gone well; a double figure common off the top with home made bait and some fun taking tench on the float of an evening. More serious feeder/legering might be on the cards this weekend, now I know I haven't completely forgotten what I'm doing!

As I mentioned in my welcome thread, I'm back to course fishing after a solely lure fishing period. So I need to ask a few basic questions, starting off with line colours. Does it matter much, or is it just the hooklength that's key? Lure fishing's all a bit different with hi-viz/multi coloured stuff! I've bought some 12lb maxima that's a sort of browny red colour (12lb needed because of some of the rules at my new club's waters), but should I have looked at something green/dark? Does it make a huge difference?

Also, hooklengths. Braid or mono? Mono must be used for the mainline, but a braid hooklength up to 18" is allowed. I'm tempted to stick with mono, but any thoughts? The waters are all rounders apparently. my most local one a few carp up to 20lb, but mostly smaller carp, tench (which I'd love to target), bream etc.

You not doing so much from the Kayak then Chris ?

I do not use braid mainline at all,in fact I rarely use it for hooklink material either, though I went through a spell whilst barbel fishing, personally I think braid is very obvious, but is supple, monos are far more versatile, some are supple, some are stiff,in general I found monos were more successful in my barbel fishing,so that is what I fish,at times I use fluorocarbon, though I remain a little unsure on the actual effectiveness over ordinary monos, that said if using a hair, said hair stays good presentation wise because of the stiffness of the shortish link...

There's nowt wrong wi' Mono or Braid, I do however prefer Mono overall as the stretch is more forgiving in most circumstances??
