HELP NEEDED

Hi guys,

This is a bit of a long shot, but I was hoping some of you guys on here could help. I don't really know where to go for advice, so I thought I'd start with the guys who know a bit about fishing!

I've recently been given a rather lovely set of black and white mounted drawings of fly anging.

All are sealed in polythene bags, (hand sealed, not factory produced) which bear the printed label "Illustrated from Drypoints by "NORMAN WILKINSON".

Titles are "Fishing out the tail", "Haunt of the brown trout", "A game fish", "A heavy fish", "The Minister's Pool"

The prints are approximately 8" by 6", and they are mounted behind cream coloured card, approx 12" by 10", backed with very stiff brown board.

From what I've been lead to believe, they were from the stock of a long defunct angling shop. I was given them along with a huge load of hooks, lines, traces, floats, books, tackle and magazines etc, from a friend who's husband used to run a tackle shop in the Midlands.

They are in absolutely pristine condition, and I would like to find out something about them.

If it helps, in the same collection, I also have some lovely black and white drawings, mounted in the same way. Two are by someone called C. F. Tunnicliffe, and then a further four lovely sketches of country scenes, artist unknown, but signed with the intitals "TE"? Could perhaps be TC, and the date appears to be 1927.

Titles are "When work is short, it will not be the countryman who is short of work", "Pleasantly to waste the time of those they find working", "That quality of peace which dwells in the country places" and lastly, "There are counties of England in which men can be found who are sufficiently skilful...to cut and lay a hedge"

There are some I wish to keep, as they are wonderful depictions of a bygone age.

The others I would like to sell, with the proceeds going to charity.

I've been offered £10 for each print by a local shop, but they were so quick to offer it that it makes me think that they may perhaps be worth more.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

There are some Wilkinson prints on Ebay for £15.00, but I also found this for over £500.

C F Tunnicliffe is a very well known artist, particularly of birds.

I would definitely investigate further before accepting a tenner each.

Slightly O/T but hey.

C.F. Tunnicliffe also illustrated my favourite fishing book "Going Fishing" by Negley Farson. Brilliant book that i would highly recommend.

Thanks for that Ayjay.

Last time I looked on E-Bay I couldn't find anything, although it was quite a while ago.

The ones for sale are very similar to mine, except that the ones I have are pristine, with no marks whatsoever, and are well mounted ready for framing.

The one you found at over £500 is indeed the same picture as one that I have. Unfortunately though, mine is a print, and not an original!

Lovely pictures though, aren't they? I think they are worth more than a tenner each.

Any more information from anyone would be most welcome!

Janet, the £500 etching is just a signed print. Yours also may be signed in pencil. Check under the mount too.

Thanks Greg,

Mine is signed, but it appears to be just part of the print, and not an addition by the artist.

Now that would have been good, wouldn't it?

I've checked under the mount - it's the first time I've taken any of them out of the bags they're sealed in, and I'm delighted to say it looks even better when it's uncovered. There are a few tiny brown marks on the print, but they are only at the very bottom edge of the paper, and so completely covered by the mount.

I have eleven of them altogether, and not enough room on my walls!

I looked for Tunnicliffe prints on all the eBay sites I have data for. Some of the below were Jayne but mostly C.F. Based on these prices (although many were not framed) the £10 offer might not be so bad.

Cheers for that Newt!

I'm happy to let the Tunnicliffe's go for a tenner, as they don't really appeal to me, but I thought the fly fishing ones would maybe be worth a bit more. They really are rather nice, especially as they're already mounted ready for framing. Watching the shop owner who offered me the deal, it was clear that his interest was mainly in the fishing pictures.

The other, unknown artist ones are also rather good, with lovely fine line drawings of English country life as it was in the 1920's. I'm going to do a bit of research in the library this week, and try and find out who the artist is.

I'm not in any hurry to sell, and I rather think that I may keep the fly fishing pictures myself.....the more I look at them, the more I think I'd be reluctant to part with them!

Newt, I'm sure there are words to describe men like you!

How on earth did you get those results? I've searched and found nothing! I looked on various sites before I posted here, but found nothing of any relevance......

However, in my defence, I really think I was born to be blonde!
