30/50 lb class rods are fine and you will get away with them if you don't have the tide run, but if you do have a good bit of tide, like most of the areas I fish 80lb class is far better.

This 30/50 is really a good 50lb and probably as good as a soft/old Oceanic. We know the Shakepeare 50lb braid rod can handle the skate, as Sandtiger proved. If it doesn't work, then we ask them to make an 80lb rod, although we may have to look for different rollers. Failing that I'll have a word with a well known rod manufacturer for a longer 80lb blank.

ST at least it'll be interesting :)

Depending where you fish and the depth of water -I would think that the fish would be brought up near vertical - as opposed to it kiting up behind a boat - hopefully you can get it over any 'ledge' from the deeper water.

A rod with a through action may b the best for that scenario as a tip action rod may not give adequate leverage to get the fish from the bottom ( assuming that you are using 12ft+ rods ).

A South African style rod may suit as they land Copperhead Sharks and Guitar fish from the beach!

Hope you get a few!

Good Luck

Kenny

LOL @ norrie,

My S african shark rod wouldof done the job alright, BRoke it at the home nations due to "abnormal use" Went for a cast, lead flew off and the rod flew round and whalloped the high pier wall, Next time i snagged and bent into it thje fiberglass at the point where it hit the wall absolutely exploded :) Was exiting, Good thing is, there 3 piece, only the tip is broke, can quite easily get a new tip, which is in the post now so i believe, ALthough im planning on "borrowing" one of my dads tips for the rod for the trip :)
