Winfield Tackle.

I bought a Winfield Spoon up the Glasgow Barras recently for a whole quid. A new set of split rings, a hook and some nice tinsely stuff and we have a new spoon. I don't know if I have the heart to use it though.

Andy, that looks like a spoon we did very well with on Bewl about 20 years ago. Is it about 4" long? It was a little under the regulation 5" but the management allowed us to use them for perch, for which it was excellent. The only slight downside was that it used to tangle a bit casting into the wind and needed quite a bit of feathering of the line to minimise this.

It's just about 5" long and pretty heavy as well. I gave it a good polish and its come up good. I might have to have a throw somewhere without too many potential snags.

Hi all,

I'm a new poster.

Wonderful thread!

Like many of you I kicked off with tackle scrimped and saved for and purchased at Woolies. My first rod was a Winfield six foot solid glass spinning rod. Anyone remember them? Chrome ferules and bright red whippings, they came on a card with a cheap fixed spool reel, a spool of thick white mono and one of the aforementioned toby type lures.

Armed with this, a couple of quill perch bobs and some huge single hooks, I cycled endless fruitless miles until the obligatory 'considerate' angler spotted my set-up and donated some appropriate end tackle. As we do :-)

Hi Slodger, and welcome. Did you have your regulation copy of Mr Crabtree Goes Fishing?

My first Winfield rod was a boat rod. Long wood handle and short bit of white glass and garish whipping. Very non English it was! But I loved it!!

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for the welcome. Curiously enough the Crabtree stories passed me by until my late teens. I say curiously because I was an avid reader of angling books as a youngster. I remember the various authors like Peter Stone, Peter Wheat, Walker, the Taylor brothers and so on, that all became accessible with a loan of mum's library ticket.

I did have a couple of the Winfield books (Or at least the angling books Woolies sold.)including a paper back book of Pike fishing by Prof Rickards. I often wonder if anybody has ever retained a copy of this, I've never seen one since.

Your thread has bought back some great memories, many thanks.

Dunno about the one you've mentioned but I've got this one which is quite eye opening by today's standards.

And thankfully Barrie has led the way since this book came out.

Some of the subject matter would have you gasping for air these days.
