Allis Shad

Hi there,

I was watching Rick Stein tonight and an old French fisherman was fishing for what looked like allis shad. He was netting them in a river estuary.

There was some stuff about conservation but there were nets everywhere and the stocks were declining.

Not a lot of hope for the shad down there!

They cooked them on a barbecue made of vine trimmings.

Stein suggested that if you could not get allis shad then you should use mullet

I caught one once, and it was so badly hooked that regretfully I had to hit it on the head. I tried BBQing it but it was full of bones and didnt taste too good! But the thin lipped Mullet I caught in the sea that tasted great!

There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot!

They are on the list. Big fine for catching Allis Shad. I have accidently caught 2 over the years. One off the wall at Thamesmead about 2lb and a smaller one in the Medway. Both were returned alive.
