Pc will not connect to internet

that the router is working properly as it has given the local wired adaptor an address from its DHCP pool. I would untick IPv6 in the properties for that adaptor. Also it won't hurt to change the DNS servers on the adaptors to 212.139.132.27 primary and 212.139.132.26 secondary as already suggested.

 

To do this you would have to use the same ip address and subnet mask but tick > from obtain an ip address automatically to > use this ip address.

Been there, done that. Have even manuall entered IP addresses etc.

 

The machine will ping hosts by address and by name, but will not connect to web servers using IE. IE just times out. I haven't even tried wireless yet, not much point if it wont connect with a bit of 100-Base-T cable.

 

I'm not sure that IPv6 has any role in the problem.

It would if the NIC were bad.

 

IPv6 tunnels over IPv4 in order to work and in Vista it is on by default. Just tryin to help.

I know and glad of all the help i can get. I'm nearly bald by now.

 

The thing is that this vista PC gets a valid ip address, can ping local hosts, default gateway, www.anglersnet.co.uk, but refuses to connect to anything with a web browser.

 

The same thing happens whether it is the onboard NIC or a USB 802.11g wireless nic.

Strange that it acts the same way with both NICs. Since you get a reply from AN, can you tracert from the command line and see how many hops? Not that it matters really. It would be interesting to see what the traffic looks like at any rate. Have you ever used wireshark? It's free packet sniffing software.

As far as I know the windows firewall is off. I've not tried wireshark but I may download it and have a play. There are half a dozen or so XP boxes and various game consoles. They all connect just fine.

reset..

 

then go back in & under

browsing

untick Enable Third Party plug-ins.

 

If you can get to most sites

except antivirus ones

...then it's a newish virus.

 

pinging. ipconfig /all, dns settings, tracert et al,

don't matter much fo the new rootkits around atm.
