MC, the second lot of chenille will do the job for you, but you may need to reduce the whiskers after fitting it. I would suggest a drop of superglue, just a tiny drop put on before winding the chenille on. You may also consider putting 3 or 4 short bits on instead of trying to get a complete wrap.

I think if you stop backwinding the problem will dissapear anyway.

Just in case you have broken or incomplete reel, what should happen is that a push with your fingertip anywhere on the black button will disengage the pin and the line is then free to come off the spool. You should get a distinct "Click". Turning the handle will cause another "click" and the pin will pick up the line.

Sorry if you already knew all that :)

Hi Tinca, I made a few spools for my 506 and had the same trouble as you finding the right stuff. The closest I could find was 3 mm diameter pipe cleaners but these were a little bit big(they fitted but there was too much fluff sticking out and the reel did not turn as freely), to get round this I made the slot deeper. Easily done when you are making the spools from scratch but you will have trouble. I think if you could find 2 mm dia pipe cleaners(I couldn't) I think you'd be ok.

Dens stuff is close, although a bit too fluffy. I looked up Chenille thread and came up with this site, it's an American site but I'm sure they would post, or maybe even Newt can help you out.

Hi ,i've dug out the last lot i used ,its the fuzzy sticks stuff from tesco's ,its the same as the current stuff but diferent .it seems smaller / thinner . it comes in a multi pack of many neon colours (tango'ed orange , lime green ,bannana yellow ,purple haze , sky blue and girly pink (of which i've used one strand) theres six or seven strands in each colour ,its the twisted wire type thats simular to the origanal stuff ,it does require trimming at the end where it fits through the hole's ,it slots strait into the runner (channel) then cut to length with the end trimmed and pushed through the second hole and the ends twisted together to secure and cut short & laid flat ,then you just trim the fur around the edge and the jobs a good en .

theres plenty too spare ,if anyone wants any of the following colours (in pairs) orange ,yellow ,green ,purple and i'll send two strands (7"-9") either the same colour or mixed

I have been reading this topic with great interest.

I have an Abu 501, I have no problems what so ever when using the plastic spool which has a nylon edge to it, but when I use the metal (lightweight aluminium) spool I have a real problem when trotting that the line does not pull from the spool without getting stuck and needing to be pulled off by hand. It appears it sticks to the edge of the metal spool rim in my humble experience!

I bought some chenille from ebay as I thought this would solve the issue, however there is no where on the metal spool of the 501 for it to be located. I also have a 1044 and that has a location 'gutter' for the chenille to sit in.

Can I just glue it around the edge of the metal 501 spool or should it be located some where else?

Any help or ideas greatly received.

Thanks

Simon

on the old metal spools there is no channel so a alternative arrangement is needed as previously stated the problem of preventing line slipping under the spool is to use some thick line (20lb + ) and glue 1" strips to the underside of the old plain spools at regular intervals overlapping the edge & cut to fit

Thanks so much Chavender, I had seen what you had written previously but was not 100% sure if it was suited to the 501.

I really appreciate your help and will get the super glue out tonight!

Thanks

Simon

it'll take about 16 strips i think ,i do the four quarters ,then double up to eigths on the smaller 501's etc but squeeze in another round and double up again on the bigger 507 spools

on the newer goldmax 507's that use a rubber band type line guard ,you can fit a felt band to the spool or around the side of the spool housing .
