Brean Down

Thinking of taking a trip down to Somerset this summer sometime, possibly a family holiday for a week or two, staying around Burnham/ Berrow Beach area. Does anyone know anything about the fishing from the shore here? What can I target on the beaches and as for Brean Down...how do you fish the mark? I've been there before, though not for fishing, and had to walk to the old gun emplacements at the end. Do you have to walk all the way with tackle or is it possible to drive down? I keep seeing reports from Brean Down and it looks good for winter cod...anything worth catching in the summer?

fishing from the beach is entertaining ,i walked to the low water mark (we were camped at channel veiw )(be VERY carefull of the mud) cast out and set up the rod in a tripod AS SOON as the incoming tide reached the tripod it started to fall over from then on it consisted of cast out ,move tackle 20yds up beach walk back carry rod and tripod to tackle and the same all the way up to the high water mark (that changes daily) the tide comes in and out at slow walking pace and its shallow for a mile or so out :(

fishing from the rocks at the end of the down is also difficult as you can be cut off and there are only a few places to escape up the cliff .

there was lots of small stuff to be caught but nothing to take home for the freezer .

this beach is

NOT safe for unnatended kids (one was drowned at burnham) the mud that is just under the sand quickly turns into a very dangerous state as soon as the tide hits it .

on the otherhand watching peoples cars sink (and there usually one each tide :D ) is fun, the whole beach is used as a carpark in the summer and theres always someone that gets back too late :D

if you want to be close to the sea (about 30ft)use channel veiw

its far enough away to the amusements to help with keeping you in pocket ,but the walk along to them along the beach is great exercise especially at night and perfectly flat.great cider can be bought from the nice lady who runs the shop up the road on the big caravan site (forget its name) we spent 2 weeks there and our cat that was with us presented us with 9 kittens ,great times :D

i've just come back from brean fishing for the first time on the beach conger thornbacks and bass up to 9lb have been showing i had a 10lb conger and a nice 5ib thornback ray, bait was mackrel peices. this was 3 hours before high tide and had a fish within 30 minutes. ther is a way to drive up brean down i,ve seen them park up by the fort at the end, i have no clue how though. i was told its quite dangerous fishing the rocks off brean down the tide can creap up quick hope this helps :)
