Peter Waller:

what did I catch? Eels, and yet more eels, and even more eels.

Ah, so perhaps someone has been capturing elvers by the bucketload and transporting them upstream (nudge, nudge, wink) :P

This highly illegal practice will result in plenty of bootlaces :(

Not that I would recommend that anyone should do this

Sarcasm ,nudge, nudge, wink ,wink is the very lowest form of wit.

For your information Vagabond, the EA have sold approx 200 licences to net Eels and Elvers in the Anglian region, three years ago , it was twice that amount, is there a connection?

Same for me, went out Wednesday evening and had eight and yesterday had about 5 during the hottest, sunniest day of the year.

Also had a pike on a strawberry boilie.

Going out tonight to hopefully catch some bream

Just been out for an early morning session and yes, some more eels, but one did make 4lb 4oz!! My biggest to-date and I don't mind 'em like that. All of a dither I am, on a light match rod it was quite exciting. Splendid beast, nicely hooked, almost a pleasure to handle!

Dear Peter

Splendid news on the bootlace front.....thanks for the info....and to the other news of bootlaces up in the northern end of the British Isles.

Congratulations on the new PB.....best side of 40 years old.....both of you.

I caught my first eel on Wednesday! :D It was berr luddy huge! I thought I had a really big carp on because it was fighting like a beast. I had the shock of my life when I saw it was an eel (I just wasn't expecting one). I was fishing a mixed fishery (mostly carp etc) and had been catching Crucians and skimmers off the bottom (using the lift-method with sweetcorn).

I've looked at photos of eels and I'd say it was about 3lbs (very rough guess though!) but it definately wasn't a bootlace. :D . Fortunately it was hooked right on the lip, perfect.

It was very similar to this one but it was definately a bit longer:

It wasn't as big as this one though:

(That's not me in the pics. Just some random guys)

Do eels bite?

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

"how old do you think that eel was then, really 40?"

Ratty - a 4lb eel would defo be getting on for 40 years old - will have seen a fair few miles too
