I may be in the market for a flat screen monitor soon :)

I have a pretty powerful PC and graphics card (handles AVCHD editing OK) and am looking for advice as to resolution etc.

For a budget Monitor i can recommend an Emprex 22"

Got it from Comet last year for 149, now 137 on line

Currently plugged into a laptop for dual screen.

I like it even though it is low end ;)

Den - what are your requirements? I.e., what will be the most demanding thing you will be doing?

Do you want a CRT flat screen or one of the LCD monitors that are in total about 2-3 inches deep?

The prices on the 21 inch LCD monitors are very reasonable these days. Jan & I both have 19" ones that are several years old and they do a decent job. I suspect the newer ones are like digital cameras in that they are improved over what was available when I bought these.

When I had my computer at work replaced last year, the new system included a 19" LCD. The guy I share the office with has just had his done and got a wide screen version. It's no more than three inches wider than mine but the difference that makes is huge. Having two documents on the screen at the same time is much easier on his

I sometimes use my big TV at home as a monitor on my laptop. The only problem is that the cable isn't long enough to sit far enough away

Newt, I don't know WHAT I want :) I suppose I am looking for the sharpest pictures and so I should be looking for a max number of pixels? Refresh rate?

Pressie time on Wednesday, and will be off to PC world, so was hoping for advice before.

if you can afford it go bigger ,i have a 25 incher (oooer mrs) old and slow but def kinder to the eyes especially reading

yes pixels the more the better and fast as possible ,if money still isnt a problem i would plump for a well known name rather than a not so well known at least the bigger companies have a name to live up to.

widescreen versions give a more real life scene ,my mates old (now) mac widescreen monitor puts most to shame its stunning but as its a mac and he's loaded it cost a packet!!!

dont be afraid to haggle even pc world caves in if your brave enough ,just call the manager the oiks up front just want to sell you a complete system ;)

its a buyers market now make sure you enjoy it.

Pixel count for clarity Den. Refresh rate if you are a gamer who likes the action games.

As Chesters & Colin note, larger screen is good. I suggested 21" because at this point, it is probably the one with a price point that gives you the most monitor for your money.

Also, make sure you see the monitor in action so you can compare. To some extent, "best" will vary according the the eyes of the user.
