Penn 525 Super mag

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am looking for a bit of help so thanks in advance.

I have decided to purchase a Penn 525 super mag to use with my 16' mitchell surf caster.

The ground is clean sand and I will be using a 60lb tapered shock leader.

I am looking to load the lightest main line which will be suitable for hopefully longcasting of leads between 3 - 5oz.

I am also not sure whether to go with a super grade mono or braid.

I believe you don't want to go too thin with your line on bigger reels like 525's and SL20SH's as the line level doesn't drop very fast leading to birdsnests at the end of the cast. Heck, it's not as if you'll run out of line! Daiwa tournament is a good line as Socksy suggested.

Glad you said mono as I have miles of it.

I went to a closing down sale a few months back and in a flurry of silly buying purchased the following at half price:

1000m ProGold Strickly Specimen Terry Eustace 15lb test Dia 0.015".

250m Berkly Vanish Flourocarbon 10lb test Dia 0.011".

758m Ultima F7 titanium 20lb test Dia 0.37mm

Now the Ultima is deffinately thinner by comparrisom than the ProGold have not done the conversion.

The reason I put the Berkly on is I have heard they use as light as 6lb test on these continental rods.

Hi Toerag,

Could be the wrong choice of reel then.

The reason for capacity is not only the cast but the backing up the beach, after casting on a spring flood you are walking back about twenty yards every five minutes or so, 200yds soon looks a bit sick.

My Abu 6500 mag ct does not hold enough 15lb for this type of fishing, but maybe if I respooled it with a lighter line it could work.

Hi Tony,

Have tried that route, one of the problems I came across was a catching on the knot joining the tapered leader to the main line.

With a lighter line this may not be a problem.

The other snag was the £70 plus Shimano fix spool did not pan out to well. I know in terms of surf casting with a fixed spool £70 pounds is mid range.

Not knowing a lot about the top of the range reels I have steered clear.

Any good advice would be well received.
