One for philosophical debate

May I just ask this one question - Do you stand back and allow thousands of INNOCENT people to die due to this madman, or do you remove him and allow the country to claw itself back to some sort of normalcy?

As I have posted elsewhere - forget his henchmen, these craven cowards will go to ground when they realise they are going to be held to account!

A post from Kleinboet made me consider this!

Could the actions of a forgien Leader ever be so reprehensable that Assasination be Justified from the wests (and wider worlds) piont of View?

I say No! that is Where Anarcy Lies although its hard to stick to your morals in the light of the Sudanise and Zimbarbwian situations, another reason is It could wwell be a two way door, that would be opend.

What do you folks think?

For what it's worth, I would have to agree with your view, although notable exceptions may have to be made on occasion for men who caused widespread misery and death for the sake of their own selfish motives. Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Pol Pot come to mind. But it seems that most assassinations occur for purely political reasons, which, as you point out, is reprehensible.

Be good and you will be lonely.

Perhaps the best assassinations are carried out by those from within the subjects own state and by their own people? One would have thought that, that sort of thing would be more popular than it appears to be these days.

We try not to, for example millions of us took to the streets to march in protest in 2003, however the 'madman/men' still got their was and thousands of innocent people did die, perhaps assassination is more effective? ;)

What was the name of the chap who persistently protested about Mugabe?

Many have. assassination has been a political tool for centuries, but as you say Emma, best left to Zimbabwe to arrange it. Mugabe has many supporters, they will not all 'toe the line' and await punishment, as in the case of Amin, many will escape to surrounding areas and continue, spreading the misery and evil to others. The area has many situations which are bad, but could be worse.

FB - His name is Morgan Tsvangirai (pronounced CHANGIRAI). He was in the "election" which Robert Mugabe CLAIMED he won!! The fact that the rest of the world disagrees with that, bothers Mugabe not a whit!

If Mugabe was to stand down or disapear or have a heart attack or whatever - Tsvangirai would take over!

We sit back and condemn millions of black Zimbabweans, (many of whom were severley beaten and tortured because the had the audacity to vote for change {ANYTHING would be better!!!}), to death and say "oh, but assassination is not the answer" WHY is it not the answer - because it is uncultured, is it because it would be treated as barbaric? Are we dealing with a normal, reasonable person or an unreasonable, egotistical rogue. If it was any other animal EXCEPT a human being (which in my mind he isn't - anyone who has done what he has to HIS OWN people is NOT human)

he would have been "put down" a long time ago!!

There is the question of what these people deserve, there is the question of what is for the greater good, and there is the question of who will set themselves up to judge.

In The Lord Of The Rings, putting the words into the mouth of his wisest character, Tolkien wrote:

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.”

So, in other words, we will be quite prepared to sit back and say "we won't condone getting rid of this animal violently - WE ARE CIVILISED - these people have to do it themselves, after all this doesn't really concern me!"

change comes from within it always has dome look at the mess were in trying force change down others throats ,the whole state of russia colapsed due to its satellites ousting the leaders (remember Lek) ,it doesnt in reality mean anything killing mugabe will change anything he has plenty of jackals just waiting to take his place.

the UN is powerless in this case just as it is in Palestine their peacekeepers will simply be killed.

as for people dying thats just what happens in these places and more will die trying to change things ,africa is rotten to the core the people (in the eyes of the leaders) are secondary to their own greed .Mandela the saviour of the poor did bugger all but run round getting invites and handshakes from the "civilised" countries he didnt give a toss for those he was elected to serve ,old habits die hard especially when you have 25 years of living to catch up with

Does he deserve to be murdered?

Will murdering him actually improve things?

Do we have the authority to make the call?

Simple as that, really. If you think the answer to all three is "yes", then fine, but do remember that there are Muslims who just as honestly and sincerely believe that our politicians deserve death for what they have done in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you think that we have the authority, you must concede that so do they. Consider the law of unintended consequences and the effect of power vacuum - are we willing to commit our soldier's lives to keep the peace, potentially for decades after?

Maybe it would be the right thing to do. I don't know. I don't feel qualified to take that decision.
