General

An interesting week with 3 frosts but still enough length of daylight to keep fish feeding well for the winter ahead with Wednesday match on the Island winning with 53lb 10oz, then 2nd and 3rd also in the 50lb bracket. Mixed baits working with 10mm pellets still catching also paste down to banded 6 mm pellets as well as worm, caster, maggots all catching on all lakes. The best answer is try larger baits and if no results, scale down to smaller and more winter sized baits, if using additives then start changing from the warmer water sweet additives to cooler temperature savoury additives.

The same applies to tackle start scaling down however the carp still fighting very well and given excellent sport when caught so we are still in the transition stage.

Water has a clarity of 13 inches so keep back of the pegs when fishing tight in margins or you will spook the fish.

Bowes

Some excellent catch rates with Fridays match producing 84lb 1oz and 73lb 3oz second in 4 hours on paste and pellet, also some good catches on worm and worm cocktail has been produced. Carp are feeding up for winter and some known carp have gained some good weight, you can still get carp up in the water if you persevere,  they are just starting to come together in small shoals and moving around searching for food so watch for the feeding bubbles to target the shoal.

Large carp feeding very well with Ian Blenchinsope from Chester le Street catching a common of 22lb 8oz and a 20lb 10oz on worm cocktail over pellet.

Lookout

Has kept fishing very well after 3 frosts this week, some excellent carp out avaraging 4 to 5lb, and lots of crucians now showing, some exceptional koi and ghosties have been caught but they are not crusing but tight in to reeds as water starts to clear. Skimmers and bream being caught on dead bottom,  rudd caught on the drop with pellet or maggot sprayed over the hook, lots of ide, orfe and roach  to good sizes being caught. Tench both green and golden feeding of the bottom and perch of all sizes even this years home bred are catching well. Fishing is at an in between stage of pellet and paste working with persistance and winter baits of maggot, worm and caster with water temperatures around the 8 deg mark. The fish are still feeding up well for winter as there is still enough daylight hours to accommodate the feeding, dusk and dawn giving some excellent catch rates.

Bassetts

Some good carp caught this week over the 10lb mark, and 3lb ide, 11/2 lb orfe and skimmers coming on well. Crucians have shown very well this week as have the rudd and ide, not many tench caught however 3lb golden tench catching and some green tench. In the winds this pond has provided great sport when the other lakes where white water tops.

A group of 14 men from Holland on a 3 days holliday came to try out fishing as part of there holiday so we took them onto the Lookout island, and all caught with some great carp showing as well as skimmers, rudd, crucians, and ide, coaches, assistants and the ‘young ones’ as they call themselves all had a great time.

Very soon coaching over the winter will just be for one to ones to top up fishing skills, or learn to fish as the winter cuts in as it is hard to get new anglers enthusiastic when ambient temperatures are very low.
