The Environment Agency is reminding North West Coarse fishing anglers that the annual closed season runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive – meaning they cannot fish on any rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales during this period.

The reminder comes following a significant increase in the amount of anglers who have been caught fishing during the closed season.

Nicki Rushton, Fisheries Team Leader says: “Already this year approximately 20 anglers have been caught on the Rivers Weaver, Goyt, Dane and Wheelock and Environment Agency water bailiffs are responding to an increased number of calls from members of the public and angling clubs who are reporting illegal fishing activities.”

The annual closed season is designed to protect fish whilst they are breeding to help preserve and boost stocks. Anglers are not able to fish on rivers, streams and drains in the region, but they are able to fish on still-waters and canals. Those caught fishing illegally face tough penalties, including fines of up to £2,500.

Environment Agency water bailiffs are patrolling rivers and streams to ensure people are observing the closed season. They are also checking lakes and ponds to make sure those who are fishing have a valid rod licence.

Nicki continued: “All rod licences expire on 31 March so it is important for anglers to ensure they have a new licence when on still waters and when they return to the rivers after 15 June.”

Anyone aged over 12 who fishes for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England, Wales or the Border Esk in Scotland is required to have a rod licence by law. The money generated by rod licences is ploughed directly back into improving fishing for all anglers.
