Atomsix news release

Atomsix Fly Rods are custom made fishing rods designed and built by Ex Air force Engineer Stephen Parkes in the United Kingdom. These exquisite pieces are proving to be the new must have addition to any serious fly fisherman’s armoury and are rapidly getting a cult following by fishermen ‘in the know’ . Made to measure and designed to offer casting power, distance and presentation; the range of Atomsix rods covers all needs. From a small brook rod for English chalk streams to a versatile 10ft 8wt for large rivers or competition reservoir fishing and a salt water rod coming soon.

When Stephen Parkes left the Royal Air Force after more than 10 years working with Harrier Jets and getting a pretty good grounding in carbon fibre and aeronautical engineering, he decided to take time out to improve his fly fishing. It was at this time that he started to not just build his own rods but also started building rods for other people.  Over the last few years Stephen has been working with a British composites company to produce his own range of fly rod blanks. People who have tried them found them to be like nothing else on the market and started to commission their own rods. It seemed that his unique combination of engineering knowledge coupled with love of fly fishing was proving to develop into a business.

And so Atomsix was born (the name derived from the atomic number for carbon being 6). The range of 3 rods (based on casting action) is becoming more and more popular. They are all individually hand built by Stephen who sees the whole process a little like buying tailored suit. He discusses with clients their needs and what they want and offers the use of rods to try out before deciding on the specifics. He will even hand craft the cork grip to suit the client’s hands and will finish the rods as requested. At the end of it he is even happy to help the client with any casting techniques.

“Some clients are very experienced and know exactly what they want and it is great to work with them. Some of them are advanced casting instructors or international fly fisherman, however I often get the most enjoyment out of making a rod for clients with less experience because it ends up being a huge learning process for them and they get more out of it than just a fly rod built specially for them,” said Stephen, who has recently completed a range of fly rods for an Italian fly fishing school as well as a rod for the Welsh International Rivers Team.

Also pricing doesn’t fly as high as some of the Harrier jets he used to work on. “Obviously there are only so many rods I can make in a year but I price them below the leading brands of fly rod. At the end of the day if you’re going to spend that amount of money on a rod why buy an off the shelf rod by a leading brand when you get one tailored for you for less money with equal if not better performance”. Atomsix Rods all have a warranty against breakages and can be repaired quickly and easily.

Lead times vary between 2 and 4 weeks and examples of the rods can be seen at www.atomsix.co.uk
