Environment Agency Wales has developed a plan to make sure there is enough water for the environment and for people in north Ceredigion.

Water is an important resource, with many people needing to take water from rivers for agriculture, industry and water supplies. This needs to be balanced with the needs of the environment, wildlife and recreational users. This is why the Agency has published its plan for managing water resources in north Ceredigion rivers.

The North Ceredigion Catchment Abstraction Management Strategy (CAMS) explains how water resources will be managed over the next six years in the area. It includes the rivers Aeron, Arth, Wyre, Ystwyth, Rheidol and Clarach.

Elizabeth James, Environment Agency Wales CAMS Officer said: “These river catchments contain some of the most beautiful landscapes in Wales and support a rich diversity of wildlife. The benefits that these bring to people’s lives and the local economy are significant. The rivers have played a large part in the development of the landscape. They support the wildlife, provide domestic water supplies to homes and businesses and are used for the production of hydro-electricity. It is important to protect these vital resources.

“This strategy makes information on resource availability and abstraction licensing more available and explains how we propose to manage these water resources in the future. It is available to anyone who has an interest in water resources, but particularly those who wish to abstract water from these catchments for any purpose. The North Ceredigion CAMS will enable businesses and private individuals to consider water resource availability prior to applying for an abstraction licence.”

Following public consultation on the draft strategy last autumn, a Statement of Response was issued and the final strategy developed. This final document is available to view on the Agency web site www.environment-agency.gov.uk/cams.
