Keith Arthur, the presenter of weekly fishing show Fisherman’s Blues, announced on talkSPORT, the UK’s only national commercial speech radio station, today (April 1) that fishing is to be a new Olympic sport.
He said: “This has been bubbling under for a month now, and you can tell I’m excited. The Angling Trust has been deeply involved with the IOC [International Olympic Committee] so and I’ve heard that carp fishing is going to be an official Olympic sport. I was thinking it would be fly fishing but because carp are everywhere it makes sense to have carp fishing.”
Keith tipped England for a Gold medal, saying: “Olympic gold will definitely be on the cards for England because we do so much of it, but South Africa are hugely strong. And some of the Eastern European teams – Serbia and Croatia. Croatia is a massive carp fishing country.”
It was Alan Brazil’s co-presenter, Ronnie Irani, who first smelt something fishy about the story, checked the date and realised that they’d been hooked in and wound up.
