Catch Report, 9-16 January 2012

Sailing Lake
The onset of cold weather over the last few days has done nothing to slow down the excellent Pike fishing with nearly all anglers reporting at least 1 fish. The biggest fish of the week was a cracking 22lb 4oz specimen landed by Barnsley anglers Kevin Thomas who was actually targeting the resident Zander using legered deadbait Roach. He did take his first Zander to, with a fish of 11lb 2oz. Another angler getting amongst the bigger Pike was Philip Lawrence of Leicester who took 4 fish between 12lb and a new personal best fish of 19lb 6oz using float fished Mackerel tails.

Zander fishing has slowed a little with the colder weather but Colin Francis of Nottingham fished a few hours into dark to take 2 Zeds of 9lb 6oz and 12lb 10oz and a bonus 17lb 8oz Pike.

An overlooked species in the sailing lake are the Perch. Those who do spend a bit of time and effort targeting the relatively unknown potential of the lake are beginning to gain reward, one such angler is Steven Jackson of Melton who has been fishing legered lobworms and chopped worm & caster over a previously baited spot near some marginal snags. Steve was finally rewarded last week with 2 cracking fish of 1lb 9oz and 2lb 14oz, a new personal best. Steve believes there is bigger fish just waiting to be caught.

Finally to a bizarre capture by Martin Parkes of Sleaford who took an 8lb Mirror Carp on a deadbait Roach intended for Pike! Nothing that unusual in that you say but half an hour earlier it had been chasing a lure around that Martin was fishing!

Boys Pit
The Boys Pit has seen lure anglers taking plenty of Pike to double figures and even the odd Perch to 1lb. Biggest Pike of the week was a 17lb fish taken by Chris Merry of Leicester on a float fished Herring tail.
