Work has just finished on an Environment Agency funded project to provide special angling platforms for Stoke on Trent Disabled Angling Club at their pool at Consall Country Park.
The pool is situated in the Churnet Valley and is a Local Nature Reserve. We agreed to help fund the installation of 14 new angling platforms, and the fitting of steps and handrails to nine. We also agreed to upgrade the paths at the top and bottom end of the pool.
The cost of the work came to £11,789.00 plus VAT. It has been funded through money raised from the sale of rod licences.
Ten fishing pegs (platforms) are now suitable for disabled anglers in wheelchairs. Another nine have steps and handrails instead of a slippery bank down to the water making these safe for disabled anglers that do not need wheelchairs. All these pegs may also be used for teaching young anglers the art of fishing.
Fisheries Technical Officer, Mick Buxton, says “Everyone is extremely pleased with the work, and the anglers can’t wait to try out the new platforms but the pool is closed until 16 June while the fish are spawning. The new platforms will make angling available to many more Staffordshire people.
“This is yet another project to benefit anglers, which has been funded by fellow anglers through the money from rod licence sales.”
The platforms were built by local company, P2 Services of Stone, who completed the work last weekend (Saturday 10 May, 2008). The company has also done extra pathwork for the anglers at no extra cost.
