“Tough week on rivers”

Morgan McGinley and son Brendan, from U.S.A. fished with me for a few days last week in driving rain assisted by winds to 60 km per hour. Water levels were high and rose steadily with each passing day.

Most of the fishing was with wetfly and nymph, but we did get some fish to dryfly when the weather allowed.

Brendan, a new comer to flyfishing took some nice fish with wets, topped by one of just under 2 lbs. and Morgan was not to be bested by taking a fish of similar size. Most fish were in the 8 to 12 inch range and are already in peak condition.

As usual all fish were returned safely to the water.

Richard Gorodecky fished with me on the 13th and 14th May. Conditions were tough to say the least with cold winds and rising water levels. Richard stuck to dry fly for both days and had a lot of small fish, he managed about 12 trout in the 9 to 12in range. The weather for the coming week is for more wind and rain which will keep the water levels extremely high for this time of year. When the water eventually drops to a more pleasant level, the fishing will really take off.

Major Flood on the river

Following frequent rain in the last week and an inch (24mm) of rain on Sunday, May 21st, the river is now in flood & is peaking this afternoon at 2.76m on the gauge. A big flood at this time of year is perfect to bring in the run of large (10-15 lbs.) May fish plus grilse.  There were already signs of a run starting before the flood, with 2 fish taken on Saturday, May 20th. including a grilse.  A large number of fish have been seen running through the weir at Fermoy & also on the upper beats on the Lodge fishery.  The weather forecast for the next 2 weeks is mainly dry, so the river will have the chance to come into good order & should be fishable with worm & spinner by Wednesday. It may take a couple more days before it will be in fly order.
The prospects are superb once the flood fines off. There is plenty of availability of fishing and accommodation (except for June 3 when the entire Lodge is fully booked).

Best Regards & Tight Lines

From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

Email: salmonandseatrout@eircom.net

Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/

15/5/06 I start with a back date 14/5/06 I failed to report a fine Salmon caught by a guest from South Africa fishing with Mr Tim Moore these facts were given to by John Murphy Manger of the W.F.D.G. or  www.loughcurrane.com  back to the present there were a few nice Sea Trout caught, and in the striking zone were, Mr Neil O’Shea and @ oshealoughcurrane@eircom.net fishing with a guest, who caught a fine Sea Trout of 5 lbs and last but not least Niall and Jim Sayers caught a Fine specimen of just over 6 lbs and finished off with a fine 3 lbs Sea Trout, and for the rest of we anglers no comment. Wind southwest light to fresh and overcast with the sunny spells.

16/5/06 there were three Salmon caught, two on the fly and one on the troll, Mr Bob Priestly with his guest caught a 9 lbs. Salmon on a Trout fly in the sound, they also caught a fine Sea Trout on the troll which they Sportingly put back as did Mr Hussy of the UK, fishing with his Gillie Mr Dominic Mc Gillicudy, by releasing a Sea Trout of about 5 lbs. and in the Mouth of the Commeragh, a Guest fishing with Vincent O’Sullivan and of www.vincentsfishing.com caught one Salmon on the fly, but fish of the day goes to Mr Graham Peraison who caught a 9.5 lbs. Salmon on the troll, fishing with his gillie Mr Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com Wind southwest light to fresh and overcast all day.

17/5/06 Made a big flood early this morning followed by gale force southwest wind and so wild one couldn’t venture out.

18/5/06 again wild and stormy west-southwest wind, fishing brought to a standstill.

19/5/06 Eastern end of the Lake was dirty, so my noble Fly fisher didn’t have the best of conditions so once again we fishers have a good excuse for not catching my Noble Gentlemen on the Fly. On the Sea trout front Mr Liam Ellis of Coughlan’s Bar, Douglas St Cork caught a fine 5 lbs Sea Trout on the fly, also in good form was Mr Nick Park of the UK who caught a fine Sea Trout 5.5 lbs and also lost a fine Sea trout at the net in the 10 lbs. bracket? Mr Park was fishing with his Gillie Mr Vincent O’Sullivan and of www.vincentsfishing.com Wind southwest light all-day and raining all morning and made a small flood. But fish of the day goes to Mr John Lyne who caught a Specimen Sea Trout of just over 6 lbs. and just for the record I got these facts of this fish from www.loughcurrane.com

20/5/06 All Salmon fly stations were keeping a low profile or to put it in its proper prospective all Fly fishers failed miserably on their duties and the same goes in the trolling department and with the first class conditions we have no excuses except for one, we still have a rising lake and more rain is expected, on the Sea Trout count nothing to write home about and to be fair there is still a good nip in the air which is making it hard going for our Noble Sea Trout fishers. Wind west light all day with light cloud cover.

21/5/06 again another disappointing day in the fly and trolling department, but one has to be fair to my Noble fisher with the Mouth of the Commeragh in full Rage and a rising Lake there wasn’t much in favour of we the fisher and especially in the fly department with the very light to calm southwest wind. I believe in the past week, Lough Currane hit the Fishing Head lines on BBC Radio thanks to Mr Steve Bullock and his 11 lbs. 5 ozs Sea Trout all I can say is lets hope my Noble Sea Trout can keep making the head lines in the Specimen department. That is all the news from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery. No Spin No Fly’s just Facts.

“Cracking Sheelin”

Report posted on Monday, May 22, 2006
By: Pat Mc LoughlinContact

Adrian McGraine called me after spending 4 days fishing on Lough Sheelin without seeing a fish.  Sheelin is a slow lake to begin with, so the task I was set looked ominous, to say the least. We arrived to bright sunny conditions and a moderate breeze, but as the evening closed in the sky took on a slightly different look. We persisted with traditional wetfly tactics, remembering to skate the bob fly at long distance and were rewarded with a nice 2.5 lbs fish on the point fly.

The lake is in perfect condition at the moment, if the weather settles in the coming week, we should see some good May fly

LOUGH O’FLYNN & UPPER RIVER SUCK

Gerry Larkin and local angler and two friends from Carrick Fergus John Mc Guckian and Eric Shannon were delighted with their fishing. They had 30 fish between them on Lough O’Flynn on wetflies. The Mayfly is on all over the River Suck system but deteriorating weather conditions are proving difficult with the Suck now in high flood.

Mick McCormack, Mullingar had 6 fish, best 4lbs. Christy Sleator, Mullingar also had 6 fish averaging about 2 lbs on buzzer and mayfly. John O’Malley, Mullingar had 4 fish, best 2 lbs and 3 lbs. Mick Devaney, Mullingar and John Burke, Trim had 2 fish each, ranging from 2.5 lbs to 4 lbs.

THE TEDDY BROWN MEMORIAL CUP…

So far May has been one of the wettest and coldest May’s in living memory and last Sunday, May 21st, was one of the wettest and coldest May Sundays in living memory but that didn’t stop anglers all around the lake taking to the water. What is it that makes ordinary men and women want to go out in such atrocious conditions, it’s the Mayfly of course and as he has such a short lifespan, usually one day, and as they will all hatch out over a three to four week period then no matter what the weather you’ve got to get out there and make the best of the exciting fishing.

So off they went and had a great day’s fishing but it was last year’s winner, Ray Dowling, who had the best day as he retained the cup which he won last year with a fantastic Trout weighing 5 lbs 1oz. Liam O’Sullivan claimed second place for his trout which weighed 4 lbs 8ozs and third place went to Sean Kelly for a trout weighing 3 lbs 12 ozs. Paul Fallon weighed in a trout for fourth place which weighed 2 lbs 15 ozs.

A special welcome to Joni from Finland, who fished with Brian Conway, this was his first time fishing with the Athlone Anglers and it was obviously Finland’s weekend as along with Lordi winning the Eurovision Joni won the raffle at the weigh in, congratulations to everybody concerned.

A special thank you to Michael Loughman of Gertie Brownes Bar for his sponsorship and for the excellent hospitality at the weigh in that evening and also to Helen Conway who was our excellent Captain of The Day.

THE BARRA FLYNN MEMORIAL CUP…

Next weeks competition, Sunday May 28th, will be for the Barra Flynn Memorial Cup. This will be a home and away competition and the away start will be at the old Railway Station at 8.30am and the Captain will be Sean Kelly while the home start will be at Gallagher’s Boat Shed at 10am and the Captain will be Pat Rohan. The weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place that evening in the Bounty Bar at the Rugby Club with the scales down at 8.30pm sharp.

The Ladies Day competition will take place on June 11th and it has been decided that it will be down river and the presentation of prizes will be in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, more details next week.

The Monday to Saturday competition for the month of May is now in full swing and there has been some fantastic fish weighed in. Currently top of the leader board is Mark Craven with a fantastic Trout weighing 6 lbs 9 ozs, second place is currently held by James Conway with a trout weighing 5 lbs 13 ozs. Dominic Conway holds third place with a trout weighing 5 lbs 4 ozs. Any fish lighter than these should be returned to the lake if possible in order to keep the lake fishing as well as possible.
