On the trout lake we have had excellent reports this week. John McPhillip had 10 trout averaging from 5 to 10.5 lbs and he lost one of at least 20 lbs (stripped all the line off his reel). Dirk Hodson had 9 trout tonight up to 20 inches in length – he had a super evening’s fishing. He was fishing with his friend David Francis who also had a good night’s fishing. Pepe and Luca, our Italian friends, also caught some lovely trout today.

Darios, who has visited us three times this week, had his best evening’s fishing tonight with 12 trout to about 12 lbs. Jimmy Duggen is also having some good fishing on the lake this week, with some nice trout to 5 lbs. The Trout Lake will be stocked at the end of the week with fish from 4 to 10 lbs.

From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

Email: salmonandseatrout@eircom.net

Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/

15/6/08 What can I say? Not a lot in the Salmon department but at least Mr Mike O’Dwyer and Family caught a few nice Sea trout on the troll along the north shore. Wind NNE light then veered N late in the afternoon light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Amount of rain fall 0.1mm, max air temperature 15.6C/60.08F.

14/6/08 There was a fine Grilse caught on the troll and sportingly put back by Mick from Cork, in the Sea trout department I didn’t here of any real rod benders, even though I am sure there were a few sea trout caught on the drift because at times the conditions weren’t bad. Amount of rainfall 0.1mm, max air temperature 16.7C/62.06F.

13/6/08 Much of the same today as yesterday so the least said the soonest mended, wind NNE max air temperature 15.3C/59.54F and personally I am glad because today was a special day for my Father who reached the grand age of 80 and who I might add has fished the Waterville Fishery for 45 years and I can tell you he has the record for the Inny and Butler Pool which he has had for over 40 years and as one Fishery Officer from Galway asked? You’re not the Famous Appleby that fished out of the Butler Arms Hotel in the sixties and seventies? and my Father replied, Guilty as Charged and on that note here is to the next eighty years.

12/6/08 All quiet on the SW front. Wind NNE light with reasonable cloud cover but with all that my noble Game Fish wouldn’t contact fly or lure
. Amount of rainfall 0.1mm, max air temperature 16.1C/60.98F.

11/6/08 Mr Sylvester Donnelly, hit’s the head line again in the salmon department when he caught a 7 lbs. on the troll in Edere Bay, on the sea trout front Mr James Hinchly of the UK caught two fine Sea Trout of which the biggest weighed in at 5 lbs. and I see on www.loughcurrane.com our Manger Mr John Murphy has reported that an angler in a hired out boat, caught a Sea Trout in the 3 lbs. class, plus there were few more Sea Trout taken by other anglers. Wind NW light to fresh and overcast, amount of rain fall 0.7mm, max air temperature 16.1/60.98F.

10/6/08 to day was a perfect example of why Co Kerry is a good sporting destination and my reason why, there isn’t many places where you can catch a Salmon in the morning then try for a hole in one in the afternoon and that is exactly what two Anglers from the USA did, fishing with their gillie Mr Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and lobsterb@iol.ie well put it this way they got the first part right, where the hole in ones is concerned I will leave that to your imagination, also in good form were guests fishing with their Gillie Mr Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com when they caught a Grilse on the troll, there was also another Grilse taken on the troll by Mr Sylvester Donnelly and on the Butler Pool Mr Mike O’Dwyer caught a Grilse on the fly. Wind NW light to fresh, max air temperature 16.7C/66.06F with reasonable cloud cover.

9/6/08 They say the early Bird catches the worm, or in fishing terms it’s the early fly that catches a specimen Sea trout and that is exactly what Mr Alcester Martin of Inverness Scotland did, when he caught himself a 6.5 lbs Sea trout on a Dark Mackerel Fly early this morning and in the trolling department all quiet on the SW front. Wind SW then veered NW light to fresh and overcast, max air temperature 18.9C/66.02F

8/6/08 A fly mans nightmare because of the flat calm conditions and my noble troller didn’t fair much better. Heavy cloud with the odd bit sun of breaking through at times. amount of rain fall 0.1mm. Max air temperature 17.1C/62.78F.

7/6/08 Mr Henry fishing out of the Butler Arms Hotel and of www.butlerarms.com caught a fine Salmon on the troll with his Gillie Mr Bob Priestly and on the sea Trout front, there were a few caught but nothing worth photographing for the photo gallery in the Famous Lobster Bar. Now to the Butler Pool where Mr Mike O’Dwyer and his guest caught a Grilse. Wind S light to calm and overcast with light rain all afternoon., amount of rain fall 3.5mm, max air temperature 16.7C/62.06F.

6/6/08 the Early shift produced a nice Grilse caught on the fly by Mr Tim Loxton of the UK fishing with his Gillie Mr Kevin Brain of www.kbfishingireland.com onto the day shift no comment. Wind first thing this morning was NE then veered NW and went SW after lunch light to fresh, with bright sunshine throughout the day. Max air temperature 16.7C/62.06F, amount of rainfall 0.7mm.

5/6/08 Lough Currane was a bit on the tame side in the Salmon department and on the Sea trout front Mr Marcel Gilliou caught three Sea trout with his gillie Mr Vincent O’Sullivan and of Vincentsfishing.com. Wind NW fresh with reasonable cloud cover, amount of rainfall 0.1mm, max air temperature 14.9C/58.82F.

4/6/08 It made a nice flood this morning with 21.2mm of rain fall. The majority of anglers had slack lines but it was a different kettle of Fish for Mr Marcel Gilliou of the UK who caught a fine 10.5 lbs Salmon on the fly at the point of the Grassy Island and finished the day off with a fine 3.5 lbs Sea Trout also caught on the fly and just for the record Marcel was with his Gillie Mr Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com also in good form this evening in the Salmon and Sea trout striking zone was Mr David Wallace and Mr Tim Loxton of the UK who shared a nice mixed basket of four Sea trout and one Grilse all in the 2 to 3 lbs Class, with their Gillie Mr Kevin Brain of www.kbfishingireland.com Wind NW fresh with bright sunshine throughout the day, max air temperature 15C.59F.

3/6/08 again all quiet on the SW front even though I am sure there would have been the odd Sea trout caught. Wind WSW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover, amount of rainfall 1.1mm, max air temperature 16.0C/60.8F

2/6/08 I start with three back dates, on the 25/5/08 Mr Peter Maxey of the UK caught a fine 6.5 Specimen Sea Trout on the fly with his Gillie Sylvester Donnelly, next in the firing line was Mr Martin Evans of the UK who caught a fine 9.5lbs specimen Sea tout on the fly on the 30/5/08 and last but not least Mr Alcester Dunbar of Scotland caught a nice mix basket of Brown Trout and Sea Trout in the two to three lbs class and just for the record both Martin and Alcester were fishing in hired out boats from Mr Michael O’Sullivan of O’Sullivan Boats and lobster@iol.ie now back to the present very little action in all departments. Wind SW light to fresh then veered NW around 5.30pm after a very heavy shower, max air temperature 18.6C/65.48F.

That is all the news from your gillie and the Waterville Fishery. No Spin no fly’s just Facts.

UPPER SHANNON

LOUGH SHEELIN

The Mayfly continues to hatch in abundance on Sheelin and the spent fishing is expected to go on for another week or more.  When conditions favoured anglers reported seeing trout rise and take the spent. As fish are now gorged with fly they tend only to rise once or twice and then go down, making hem difficult to catch. Hatches of sedge and buzzer were also evident. Eugene Mc Guinness from Co Louth had 12 trout over the week, best 5 lbs, most fish were released. Mr Paddy Lyons L.S.T.P.A. had 8 fish for the week, best over 5 lbs, most fish were released. Thomas Lynch L.S.T.P.A. had 10 fish to 4 lbs, all released. Michael Kelly from Balbriggan had 5 fish to 2.75 lbs, all released. All catches above were on the spent gnat. Other anglers reported releasing over 200 fish for the week ranging from 0.5 lbs. to 3 lbs.

The conditions were against fishing with a cool northerly wind last week on O’Flynn. The fish are now gorging on Perch fry and the more skilled anglers are having a few trout per visit using Perch fry fly imitations and Muddlers. Regular anglers to the lake Anthony Baggott, Declan McGoldrick and Bernard Mannion are all reporting 2 to 3 fish per visit during the week. With a change in weather conditions, fishing should improve if temperatures recover.

Minster Michael Finneran officially launched the newly formed Ballinlough Angling Club last Friday. The new club will be representative of many different water, angling, sporting, education and environmental groups in the parish.

Kevin Crowley reports:

Report to 18th June, 2008

Galway Weir

Grilse and some bigger fish are being caught aplenty at the Weir this week, with 144 fish landed and more hooked and not landed. Water conditions are perfect at the moment for fly fishing, and fly
anglers are having tremendous sport. Sean Moore from Laois had a grilse and a 9 lbs salmon on fly, while John Liddy from Clare had 3 grilse between 5 and 7 lbs, also on fly. Paul Smyth from Offaly had a 7.5 lbs fish on shrimp, while Simon Lenihan had a 9.5 lbs salmon, also on shrimp. Michael Barry from Galway had 2 fish of 5 and 9 lbs on fly, and Brian Howard from
Dublin, a regular visitor, had a cracking summer fish of 13 lbs. on fly. Seamus Ryan from Tipperary had 3 grilse on fly, while Eamon Power from Waterford had a nice 7.5 lbs. fish on fly. Gordon Sheedy from Limerick took a fine 11.5 lbs. salmon on shrimp, and Michael Rogers from Dublin had 2 grilse on fly. Declan McInerney from Clare landed his first ever salmon on fly, a nice fish of 6.5 lbs., under the expert tuition of James Quinn, and I’m sure Declan will be doing more fly fishing in future.

Brothers Dave and Declan O’Reilly from Dublin had 5 fish between them, with Declan out fishing the brother on this occasion. Bragging rights are very important there!

Father and son Joe and Paul McNamee from Dublin had 2 fish each for their visit, with paul taking a fine fish of 9 lbs. on shrimp. Fintan Murphy from Galway had 3 grilse on fly and shrimp, and Tom Tynan from Kildare had 2 fish on fly, with a cracker of 12 lbs. his best. Colm Adams from Dublin had 5 fish over 2 sessions on fly and shrimp, while Ballynahinch fishery manager Simon Ashe landed 2 nice grilse and returned another fish. The best fish of the week was landed by Joe McElduff from Dublin, who followed his 4.5 lbs. grilse with a beautiful 15 lbs. salmon, caught on shrimp.

It would be hard to improve on the fishing in Galway this week, but I’m sure anglers booked in over the next few weeks will do their best. With water conditions as they are and lots of fresh salmon in the river, prospects are excellent.

Western Lakes

The western lakes are very quiet at the moment, with few anglers venturing out. Hatches are confined to early morning Caenis and late evening buzzer and sedge at the moment, but fish are hard to tempt to the surface. Best results at the moment are from trolling, and 10 year old Kevin Vahey from Ballinrove proved this on Sunday when he landed a fine 4.5 lbs trout on a Rapala. Denis Kelleher from Ballinrobe also landed a fish of 2.4 lbs. on Sunday. On Carra the lake has been deserted by day, with a few anglers going out towards dark and taking advantage of the late hatches. Scottish visitor Stephen Holmes had 3 trout over 2 nights to 3.5 lbs. on dry fly. With it being so quiet on the lakes, I have no other reports to hand. With rain forecast, we may get a small flood in tributary rivers this week, and a lot of fish would be expected to start running upstream, so river fishing may pick up very soon.

Report to 11th June, 2008

Galway Weir

Grilse are really starting to run in Galway now, with more and more being seen every day. There were 35 fish landed for the day, with a good few more hooked and lost. About half the fish were caught on fly, as water conditions are now perfect for fly fishing. Regular angler Michael Leonard landed fish of 8 and 5 lbs. on shrimp, while Paul McNamee from Dublin had fish of 6 and 7 lbs., also on shrimp. Patrick Cotter from Clare had grilse of 5 lbs. and 4.5 lbs. on fly and shrimp, while Eoin Cosgrove from Tuam had 3 grilse of 3.5, 4 and 5.5 lbs. on fly. Local angler Enda Scahill had a grilse of 5 lbs. on shrimp, as did Michael Griffin from Clare, and Fintan Murphy from Galway had 2 grilse of 5lbs and 4.5 lbs. on fly and shrimp. Dave Jackson from Galway had a 5-pounder on fly, while Jimmy Dunne from Bushypark had one of 5 lbs. on shrimp. Louis Brennan from Tuan had a 4 lbs. fish on fly, and Galway man Michael Barry had a 5 lbs. fish on fly. Noel Kelly from Galway landed a 6-pounder on shrimp, and Stephen Buchanan from the Naul, Co. Dublin landed a 5.5 lbs. fish on fly. Finally regular angler Henry Cosgrove landed 2 good fish of 8 lbs. and 5 lbs. on fly.

The weir is now fishing very well, and as grilse continue to run in increasing numbers, the prospects for the weeks ahead are excellent.

Western Lakes

The western lakes have been very quiet this week, with dry bright conditions keeping many anglers off the lake. Hatches are confined to early morning and late evening now, with trout feeding mainly at these times. Caenis hatches in the early morning can provide good sport to dry fly, and buzzer hatches late in the evening into dark will also bring up some fish.

On Mask, fish have been very slow to come to the surface, and trout are concentrating more on the large shoals of perch and roach fry in the shallows. Local guide Kevin Sheridan had 5 fish for 4 rod days to 2 lbs, while Ronan Cusack from Ballinrobe and John Young fro
m Kerry had 2 fish for a day to 1.75 lbs. Brian Hall landed 2 trout to 1.5 lbs., while Brian Healy had a trout of 1.5 lbs. Some anglers were also having good early morning fishing on Caenis and buzzer patterns, but I have no reports of their catches.

Further Report from Lough Corrib: 13 year old Bobby Geraghty from Ashbourne in Co. Meath was fishing in upper Lough Corrib with his dad and while trolling a dead roach, he caught a huge Trout a specimen of 5.534 Kilos (12 lbs. 3.2 oz.) after a great battle.  Bobby wins our catch of the week award for the week of the 13 June 2008.  Bobby has submitted scales from the fish and paperwork with the Irish Specimen Fish Committee for a specimen award.  See www.cfb.ie for the great photo.

On the Weir pool, Northern Irish angler, Alan Dunlop, caught 2 salmon, for 3.34 & 3.36 lbs., while fellow Northern Irish angler, Ivor Trimble, caught a 5.54 lbs salmon. The Cathedral Beat fished well during the week with UK angler, Paul Ashworth, landing two fish one for 10.5lbs and the other which he released for 12 lbs approx.

Up river at Armstrong’s, Welsh angler, Gareth Jones, banked a 6 lbs fish. The Foxford Fishery produced 3 salmon for Seamus Darby and friend from Co. Meath, fishing worm. Two of their fish weighed for 8 lbs each with one at 6 lbs. French angler, Stephane Beuoel, landed a 9 lbs salmon while fishing at Foxford Salmon Anglers water, Rinanney. Monaghan angler, Brendan Doyle, caught a 3 lbs salmon while Thomas McKeown and friend had two salmon of 4.5 and 4.75 lbs on the Cloongee fishery.

Lough Conn.

Angling on Lough Conn was a little slower then previous weeks but is expected to pick up with the arrival of some more unsettled weather. Sixty anglers reported a catch of 60 trout for 120 rod days with an average size of 0.9 lbs.

Pat Forde and Jason McCormick from Limerick each had 2 trout each. Lawrence Mc Fadden and Gerard Cottle had 5 trout for 8 lbs, the best a 2 lbs fish. Mary Branson and Alan McIntee took 3 trout for an evenings fishing. Pieter Haraldson and his Swedish friend caught 3 trout.

The most productive fly patterns for the week were Wulffs, Green Peters, Watson’s Fancy, Fan-winged May Fly and Claret Bumble.

Lough Furnace.

Lough Furnace opened to angling on the 12th of June. Two salmon (both wild) were caught and returned by the Fishery manager Pat Hughes. The Lake is showing very good numbers of salmon building up at the salmon leap.

To arrange angling on Lough Furnace, contact, Pat Hughes, Fishery Manger, Tel: (098) 42300

Lough Arrow.

Angling has picked up again on Lough Arrow after the May Fly and is expected to improve further when the Green Peter fishing starts. It produced a very good size of fish over the week to anglers willing to fish the Murrough late in the evening. Michael Gunning caught 2 fish of 3.5 & 2.75 lbs. Sean Kelly had a lovely t
rout of 4 lbs and a 1.5 lbs fish.

Moy Estuary.

The Moy Estuary continues to fish extremely well. Good catches of Sea trout were reported over the week with fish up to 3.5 lbs taken and anglers catching large numbers of fish in general. Andy Banks from Scotland caught over 20 trout on mackerel strip, and returned most of the fish.

Ballin Lough.

Angling on Ballin Lough was very good over the week. The stocking of 250  Rainbow Trout in to the lake the preceding week lead to very positive reports from anglers about the size, quality and quantity of fish. Thirty six anglers fished for the week catching 52 trout, the best 5 lbs. Jim Muldoon and boat partner had 5 fish with 5 lbs. the biggest. Ronan Greane from the USA and Anna Mabrey from Ireland also had 5 trout with the best a 5 lbs. fish.  Pat and Denis Murphy, Castlebar, boated 5 fish.

Popular flies over the week: were Grey Ghost, Damsel patterns, Nymphs and Buzzers.

To book fishing on this popular and productive Rainbow Trout fishery, anglers should contact Mrs. Gill on 098-26128.

Angling Report w/e 08 June, 2008

Dr Gordan Gavrilovic, from Serbia with a fine Sea trout from the Moy Estuary.

River Moy.

There was some excellent angling on the River Moy, with a reported angling catch of 203 salmon for the week, which was up on the previous week, bringing the total for the year, so far, to 953 salmon. The break in the dry spell during the week saw some fresh water enter the river. Heavy rain showers in the East of Co. Mayo helped to raise water levels, in the upper reaches, to a moderate flow for this time of year, with some colour in the water. This saw a number of fish moving to the upper beats of the river.

The angling so far this year on the River Moy has been very good considering that the grilse run has not yet started.  The number of fish caught is ahead of this time last year, but it is the quality of the fish that is of most interest. A good general size of salmon has been caught with many fish in the 8 – 10 lbs. range, and a good number much larger.

The Moy Fishery had a good week with some fine salmon up to 13.39 lbs. being taken by anglers. Selby Knox of the UK had a 10.11 lbs. fish on fly while James Doran had two salmon for 7.71 and 12.37 lbs. on the Ridge Pool. The Cathedral Beat was productive for visiting Spanish angler, Fernando Fernend, who landed salmon of 10.5 lbs. and 12.5 lbs.

Up River, the Mount Falcon Fishery produced a 5.5 lbs. salmon for Mullingar angler, Noel McEntyre, while Gannon’s Fishery produced a fabulous salmon of 14.5 lbs. for Alan Lendrum from Northern Ireland. Chris Goodenough from the UK caught his first Moy Salmon, a 6 lbs. fish at the Foxford Fishery. Rinanney produced some fine fish for Northern Irish anglers, Stephen Scott and Neil Shields, of 12.5 lbs. and 12 lbs. respectively.

On Cloongee Fishery, Paul Wymes from Dublin banked 4 salmon, keeping 2 fish for 7 and 9.5 lbs. Pat Sherry from Wicklow had a 4.5 lbs. salmon, also on the Cloongee Fishery.

East Mayo Anglers waters produced a stunning 18 lbs. salmon for Dermot Drain from the North of Ireland.

Lough Conn.

The angling on Lough Conn improved when compared to the proceeding week. The westerly winds and more un-settled weather helped encourage fish to rise more freely to the fly. One hundred and forty four anglers accounted for a reported catch of 110 trout, with an average weight of just under the 1lb. mark.

Sporadic hatches of May Fly were reported over the week with some fish still falling to dry May Fly patterns. Green Peter, Watson’s Fancy, Golden Dabbler, Yellow Wolf and Spent Gnat were productive patterns for the week.

Dermot Dunne from Offaly and Seamus Kelly boated 4 nice trout for 7 lbs. while Spent Gnat fishing, the best a 3 lbs. fish. Sam and Gerard Lynch of Cork had 6 trout over two days, returning all of them. Welsh anglers, Karl Jenkins and Alien Wade, took 4 trout for 6.5 lbs., the best a 2.75 lbs. fish.

The Foxford Angling Club fished for their annual Presidents Cup, on Sunday the 8th of June on Lough Conn. Twenty five anglers competed with first prize taken by Ray Stewart with 2 trout. Second was Peter Roche, with 2 trout, while John Burke was third, also with 2 trout. The prize for best junior angler went to Michael Tiernan who finished 5th over all.

 Ballisodare River.

Angling on the Ballisodare River over the week was extremely good. Catch and release was very much to the fore with 50 salmon caught and 40 of these fish being released. The grilse run is well under way, with a good number of salmon in the 3-5 lbs. range falling to anglers. Local angler, Jimmy Cuffe had a good week’s fishing on the system catching a 9 lbs. fish, and releasing several others, including an 8 and a 6 lbs. salmon.

Carrowmore Lake.

Angling on Carrowmore has slowed somewhat, compared to other weeks, but is expected to pick up again with the imminent arrival of the Grilse run. Franz Kaiser from Bangor Erris, boated a fine salmon of 13 lbs.

Moy Estuary.

The Sea trout angling continued to be extremely good on the Moy Estuary over the week. Anglers were rewarded with good catches of trout in the 1.5 – 2 lbs mark. Dr Gordan Gavrilovic from Serbia and a party of visiting anglers boated 40 trout for 2 days angling, with guide Judd Ruane, with most of the fish released.

Ballin Lough.

Ballin Lough was stocked with 250 Rainbow trout during the week. The fish are of fantastic quality with a mean weight of 1 kg. The Lough provided some challenging but enjoyable sport over the week, with a good number of trout encountered. Bill Flynn Jnr. from Castlebar boated 6 trout, keeping one fish. Louis O Brien and boat partner caught 2 fish the best a 3 lbs. Rainbow trout.

Popular flies for the week were: Black Bomber, Claret Bumble, and Dabblers.

Lynsey Clarke reports:

RIVER DROWES – Monday 9th to Sunday 15th June 2008.

There’s no change this week. The sun still shines and the drought continues! The river ran at very low summer levels. No rods were fishing apart from visitors booked into the fishery cottages and most of these fished Lough Melvin for trout rather than the river for salmon. There is no reported catch of salmon to date.

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 9th to Sunday 15th June 2008.

Conditions on the Lough were variable over the week with some nice overcast days and decent breezes. We did not receive any rain however and the Lough remains at very low levels. There are some rocks showing that are never normally seen! Local anglers are navigating known areas slowly and caution is wise! Some rain would liven up the Lough. Nobody is out fishing for salmon at all. There were variable reports for the trout fishing with some anglers reporting good catches and others, very poor catches.

The Home International Trout Competition was held on Lough Melvin this week fishing out of Breffni Pier with Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales competing. Wednesday and Thursday were practice days with the actual competition taking place on Friday. The fishing was fairly good over the practice days with good numbers of trout caught. These were mainly sonaghan. However, the fishing was harder on Friday with the fish being less responsive and harder to come by. The competition was fairly close with the Welsh teaming winning with 20 fish. In second place was Ireland with more fish at 21 caught but weighing less than the Welsh catch. In third place was Scotland with 18 fish and bringing up the rear was England with 15 fish caught.

Also, the local competition for the O’Connor Cup was fished on Sunday. 17 boats fished out of Breffni Pier in the boat (2 man) competition. The fishing reflected Fridays result with fish somewhat hard to come by. The winners were Jacquie Mahon and Mark Deavin with 3 fish caught. In second place were the father and son team of Sean & Darren Maguire with 3 fish caught. Third place went to Bernie & Vincent Kilkenny with 2 fish caught.

We received some rain this week and the forecast is for some more rain but at the time of writing, this has not been sufficient to raise the Lough by any discernible amount.

OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 9th to Sunday 15th June 2008.

The weather was sunny and there was little rainfall once again this week. The river ran at very low summer levels all week. The gauge average for the week read a very low 0.09 metres! There were no rods fishing and consequently no recorded catch.

EANY FISHERY – Monday 9th to Sunday 15th June 2008.

The report for the Eany is much the same as the Owenea with no rainfall, sunny weather and very low water all week. The gauge average for the week read a very low 0.09 metres. There were no rods fishing and consequently, no catch to report!

RIVER DROWES – Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th June 2008.

With very little rainfall for the week, the Drowes remained at low levels with bright sunny conditions still prevalent. This meant very few rods were fishing save for those anglers already booked into the fishery cottages. One of these anglers, Urs Frei, recorded 2 grilse for the week however. The fish weighed 3 & 4 lbs. and were caught on the fly and the worm. We hope for rain to raise levels on the Lough and River!

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th June 2008.

The Lough remains at low levels with little rainfall this week. There were no anglers fishing for salmon it seems and so little to report on this front. The trout fishing was very good however with good catches of fish, both sonaghan and gillaroo on wet flies and dry flies. Anglers reported catches of up to 8 good fish per angler. Around Bilberry Island and Kinlough Bay fished particularly well with fair hatches of mayfly in Kinlough Bay and good hatches of buzzers around Bilberry and over other areas of the lough. The Ireland, England, Scotland & Wales international competition takes place this coming week with practice days on Wednesday and Thursday and the competition on Friday. It will be interesting to see how the Lough fishes.

ERNE ESTUARY – Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th June 2008.

The Erne Estuary fished well once again this week. With the dry conditions, there is little water coming through the power stations and this always equates to better fishing. Also, there are now good numbers of ‘Sprit’ in the Estuary, There were good numbers of sea trout caught to 4 lbs. plus on spinners, flies & sand eels.

OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th June 2008.

The weather was dry and sunny except for a little rain on Wednesday evening. Consequently the Owenea ran at low summer levels again this week except for a small fresh on Thursday reading only 0.16 metres on the gauge. The gauge average for the week only read 0.10 metres. With the low conditions, only 3 visiting rods were fishing for the week and the only reports are of sun burn and no fish!

EANY FISHERY – Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th June 2008.

The Eany River ran at low levels for the greater part of the week except for a small flood of 0.60 metres on Wednesday. This was a very dirty flood however, since the river had ran at low levels for some 2 months! It did however encourage a number of salmon to ascend the fishery. The gauge average for the week read 0.22 metres. The river was however quiet this week with no visiting rods in attendance and we await news of the first salmon of the season.

Lionel Knobbs, Loughs Agency Angling Manager reports:

LOUGHS AGENCY ANGLING REPORT 12 JUNE 2008

As I mentioned in last weeks report, sea trout fishing is becoming topical! With the continuing dry weather and low water levels, anglers wishing to land one of these fine fish should concentrate their efforts on tidal stretches of rivers and the first holding pools upstream.

Dawn and dusk offer the best opportunities for brown trout but as darkness falls sea trout become more active and will more readily fall prey to an anglers fly. In the early part of the night floating line seems to work best, working either the tail or neck of pools. A little after midnight (at midsummer) switch to sink tip line and fish the deeper, slower mid-sections of a pool. As the eastern horizon tinges moving into the last hour of darkness, revert to floating line and again fish the neck and tail of the pools.

Recommended trout flies are Peter Ross and Alexander for dawn and dusk and Teal Blue Silver during the hours of darkness.

Although we are all enjoying the recent fine weather, many anglers will share my concern about low water levels in rivers and lakes. We must all do our part to conserve water – the less water coming out of your tap, the more water is left in the rivers and lakes! Remember that only some water supply is sourced from reservoirs – a lot is abstracted from rivers and loughs, so let us all work to leave water for the fish. Do not wash your car, don’t irrigate your lawn, take a shower not a bath and turn that tap off! Consider rainwater harvesting – it is as simple as placing a barrel (or even just a bucket) under one of your downpipes.

Anglers are obvious ambassadors for water conservation. Fish and other water creatures need water – water is life, not just a lifestyle!

CASHEL TROUT FISHERY report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

With the help of a few clouds and a slight breeze at times, Cashel anglers were doing the business once again.

On Friday night we had our first ever ‘night fishing’ event beginning with a BBQ at 8pm.  An excellent turnout of anglers as expected banking an average of three trout each with weights up to 6 lb.  We fished all night using bright coloured flies with silver/fluorescent bodies as well as muddlers and white fritz lures.

Limavady’s Lexi Stewart and Willie Lowry had a great day taking home a real beauty each which weighed 5 lbs. 7 ozs. and 5 lbs. 9 ozs. respectively.  Young Ciaran Guy, also from Limavady bagged himself one lovely trout weighing 3 lbs. 7 ozs.  These anglers were using assorted lures.  Arnold Boreland (Limavady) used white or fluorescent buzzers to bank nineteen trout while Mr B Mellon (Maghera) had sixteen trout over two days.  Ciaran Mellon (Swatragh) bagged two weighing 5 lbs. 6 ozs and released another three which took the black buzzer.  Jason Mc Clean (Largy), a newcomer to Cashel, released nine trout which took lures and dries with the varying weather conditions.  Don Mc Arthur (Limavady) released eight excellent trout which weighed on average of three and a half pounds each.  Don used the wee dry black spider.  Aidan Feeny, Kevin Cassidy and Colin Fox (Derry) banked nine trout between them using CDC bloodworms and foam back lures.  Shaun Duggan (Gulladuff), Aidy Askin (Derry), Kevin Burke (Claudy), Caolan Mc Nally (Portglenone) had thirteen trout between them using all sorts of flies during a very hot spell.

The Coolessan Community Association (Limavady) members had a brilliant bank holiday Monday 26th May at Cashel. Mr Mark Taylor (Dungiven) and Mr Richard Phelan (Limavady) arranged for the anglers to have this educational and fun day out.  There were eight anglers in total and they used flies like the GH hare’s ear and green nomads which they had tied themselves.  Mark Taylor bagged two trout which weighed 6 lbs. 9 ozs.  Richard had a great one which weighed 4 lbs. 3 ozs.  Sean Donnelly also bagged a lovely one which weighed 2 lbs 7 ozs.  Chris Quigley also had one which weighed 2 lbs. 9 ozs.  Niall Murray bagged five trout in total with the heaviest weighing in at 4 lbs. 13 ozs.  Cashel presented him with a trophy in reward for his achievements.  Well done to all!

John Hall (Campsie) and Arnold Boreland (Limavady) managed just that by using size 18 grey dusters, buzzer assortment using t
he strike indicator and an odd wee lure thrown in for good measure.  John banked twenty-two trout while
Arnold was one behind with twenty-seven.  Maghera’s B Mellon also had a great time releasing four lovely trout which took dries and buzzers.  Lexi Stewart (Limavady) banked a real beauty which weighed 4 lbs. 14 ozs.  Chris Chapman (Lisburn) accompanied by friends Martin Armour and Ray Heasley had a brilliant weekend at Cashel teasing trout with dries, buzzers etc.  They managed to hook at least twenty trout between them.  Terry Shield and Leonard Clewer (Antrim) banked nine trout between them with Terry taking two home which weighed 7 lbs. 12 ozs.  They were using a grey damsel, GH buzzers and a silver invicta.  Kevin Burke (Claudy) banked five nice trout which were fooled by dries and buzzers.  John Hasson (Dungiven) released four good trout which took dries like the f-fly. Newcomer, Walter Mc Farlane (Portglenone) bagged three for home which weighed 9 lbs. 2 ozs.  He too was using buzzers.  Kieran Mc Donald (Limavady) bagged three weighing a total of 8 lbs. 12 ozs.  He was using a black/gold lure.  Kevin Mc Gurk (Limavady) and Shaun Duggan (Gulladuff) banked a trout each in a few hours.

UPPER SHANNON

COARSE FISHING ON THE SHANNON AT LANESBORO…

Seven visiting anglers from Manchester fished the hot water stretch and all were pleased with their catches, mostly Rudd and the odd Bream.

Paul Waghorn a regular to Lanesboro has recently launched a dedicated website on fishing in the area. This can be viewed at http://www.lanesboroughangling.ie/

Kevin Lyons, MELVIEW LODGE GUESTHOUSE, Drumlish Road, Clonrollagh, Co Longford Tel : 003534345061 Mob: Email:  info@melviewlodge.com Web: http://www.melviewlodge.com  covering fisheries in the LONGFORD AREA and the STROKESTOWN LAKES

The Lakes have been fishing well, a lot of Tench, Skimmers and Roach have been the main catches with the odd large net of Bream. Early morning is a must when the bright weather is about with some pre-baiting the night before. At the time of writing the weather has changed again so we will see what it has in store for us.

Mick, John, Steve, Tom, Matt and Liam from Cambridgshire had a weeks fishing holiday with Kevin and Jane Lyons of Melview Lodge. Throughout the week the Group were into small Bream, Skimmers and Roach until the last day. Their last day threw up some good Bream to 5 lbs, This was a first time fishing trip to Ireland for some of the lads.

Kevin along with regular guest Andy Stone had a very early session on the Shannon at the hot water stretch and put a joint weight of over 200lbs of Bream together, Kevin said due to the amount of fish and the conditions they were able to get some pictures but the welfare of the fish came first so they were pictured on the water then released safely back without any loss. Next week Andy and the lads from Doncaster with some great Tench. Join us then.

Pleasure Angling Report

Zoltan Bodnar living in Dublin fished the North Longford, Stokestown lakes with a friend two weeks ago and reported good Bream catches and some quality Tench for combined bag weights up to 105 kg. over the weekend. Swims were pre-baited with bread feed, corn and hemp. They tried an early morning session on Sunday morning.

Not a lot of anglers about generally around the Banagher area. Water levels are low and clear. Mickies pond at Moystown is fishing quite well for mixed fish, skimmers, hybrids, Roach – no Tench in the last week though. Alan and Ted Jackson fishing with Ray on Bullock Island upstream of Banagher had an assortment of fish including 9 Tench, heaviest 6 lbs. 1 oz. Other specimen sized Tench were met and lost, smashed gear, fish too strong.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report Dated 16th June 2008 …

The river level at Shannonbridge is 2.14 metres on 16th June. The weather last week was generally good with rain on one day. The catch of the week was a 10 lbs 5 oz brown trout caught by Dave Kemp while coarse fishing. Some canal anglers tell us that the weed cutting machine on the Grand Canal is now gone past Pollagh and heading for Shannonharbour.

The bright sunshine is affecting fishing and the early and late approach is working well.

Mark Edwards from Walsall and Spain fished the Hot Water at Lanesboro on a sunny 9th June using worm and red maggots to catch 155 lbs of Bream and hybrids. On 11th June Mark fished the Shannonbridge Hot Water stretch in slight rain and overcast conditions using red maggot to catch a 20 lbs mixed bag that included two Tench.

John Dix from Essex on the same day on the Shannon used maggot to catch 10 lbs mixed bag.

Paul Cox from Slough fished on the Brosna near Belmont on 10th June in fair weather using worm to catch 15 Perch for 10 lbs. Best perch weighed 1.75 lbs.

Peter Holmes and Roger Capon from Cambridge fished at Shannonbridge on 11th June using maggots to catch a good bag of Roach, Bream and hybrids. Best fish weighed 3 lbs.

Steve and Harry Johnson from Yorkshire fished at the Hot Water on 13th June using sweetcorn catching over 100 lbs of mainly large Tench.

Young 12 year old Thomas Carty from Dublin took his grandfather also Thomas Carty fishing at the Hot Water on a sunny 13th June. Both used float and worm. Young Thomas caught seven Perch and his grandfather also caught seven Perch and a small trout.

Joan Foster and Allen Harrison fished on the Grand Canal west of Pollagh on a sunny / overcast 13th June using left over maggot and caster to catch 30 plus Roach to 8 ounces, plus Bream and hybrids. Very slow to start but improved over the day.

Steve Nell from Sheffield fished the Grand Canal on a fine 12th June and used corn and a pole to catch 5 Tench and lots of bits.

Dave Kemp from Bradford coarse fished on the Suck at the boathouse on a fine 13th June. While reeling in a decent sized skimmer it was attacked and Dave landed the attacker – a whopping 10.5 lbs. brown trout. The trout was released back alive. ‘Nice change’ was Dave’s comment.

Stephen O’Meara from Maynooth fished the Hot Water at Shannonbridge on a cloudy 15th June using feeder and maggot and corn to catch 30 fish – Bream, hybrids and two x 5 lbs. Tench.  Fish biting all day.  Good fishing.

COARSE FISHING ON THE SHANNON AT LANESBORO…

Paul Waghorn a regular to Lanesboro has recently published a dedicated website on fishing in the area. This can be viewed at http://www.lanesboroughangling.ie/

Brian Bohan   CHAFLYNNS COTTAGE & GUIDING SERVICE  MOHILL reports on angling in the upper Shannon region around MOHILL and CARRICK ON SHANNON

Ian Coates, Steve and Simon enjoyed their stay at CHA’S in very warm and sunny weather. The fishing was hard during the day time due to the conditions. Steve and Simon who like to relax on their holiday did have some nice bags of Bream, Roach, Hybrids and Tench. Ian and I had some early morning sessions and Ian was rewarded with some nice Bream.

Bernard Beckett from Manchester on tour around Ireland had some nice Tench in the area , Bernard has been coming to Ireland for 48 years.

Kevin Lyons, MELVIEW LODGE GUESTHOUSE, Drumlish Road, Clonrollagh, Co Longford Tel : 003534345061 Mob: Email:  info@melviewlodge.com Web: http://www.melviewlodge.com  covering fisheries in the LONGFORD AREA and the STROKESTOWN LAKES

Last week was a little slower than recently in regards to weight, Lakes in and around Longford continue to produce some good quality fish though but not so many big weights. Hot sunny bright conditions have slowed the catches down after 10am, so with that in mind it is always worth trying an early start. Another group staying at Melview lodge managed to get into some good fish on their last day, logon next week to see how they fare over the coming week.

Clive and John from Salisbury Wilts returned to Melview Lodge for another weeks fishing and a good one it turned out to be. During the week they caught some cracking Bream to over 6 lbs., Tench, Roach and Hybrids. On one session John and Clive had caught really well and we were expecting a great picture of the fish, however Johns net had been attacked by big Pike and little did we know until afterwards it had ripped two big holes in his keep net. So as john carried on catching and putting the fish into the net they were swimming straight out the other end, When John lifted his net there were only a few fish and a large Bream left. The lads still enjoyed a great days fishing and will no doubt return to try their luck again next year.

Other guests, the lads from London Underground pre-baited and were up bright and early and were only rewarded with mainly Skimmers, Hybrids, Roach and a few Bream. Kevin commented that it’s always good fun having these lads over, the jokes and the banter never stops from the time they awake till they go to bed!

The ShRFB reports for Ray Duthie Old Forge Banagher, Bait Stockist, Tackle and ACCOMMODATION PROVIDER  Tel: 057 9151504.  BANAGHER area this week.

Fishing last week was very quiet with little angling activity evident at the usual haunts. Water clarity and strong sunshine has hampered angling during the daytime hours. Best chance of fish is late evening, early morning, Tench fishing which was lively has become quieter recently as water levels start to drop back to very low levels.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report Dated 9th June 2008 ….

The level of the river at Shannonbridge was 2.2 metres on Friday and this evening.

Allen Harrison and Joan Foster have been fishing the Grand Canal at Pollagh for three days. They told me that the weed cutting machine has now gone past Pollagh. Brad Crawford and I found the canal upstream of Clononey Bridge very weedy on Friday when looking around. The banks of the River Brosna upstream of bridge at Clononey has a mass of bushes growing on both banks. This was a very popular stretch used for brown trout fishing some years ago. A welcome service of boat trips running three times daily between Shannonbridge and Clonmacnoise on Saturdays and Sundays might interest anglers having a look at the river before deciding where to fish. Service operated by Silverline Cruisers with their 50 seater River Queen.

Steve Jenkins fished on the Shannon on pegs that had been fished every day the previous week by his mates from Sussex. Steve from Uckfield only recorded his first days catch on 3rd June. Using maggot feeder he caught 19 lbs of hybrids in 3 hours in the early morning and from 9 to 10 that night he caught 9 lbs in an hour. His friends phoned him the information while he was on the ferry. What mobile phones are for, not to mention friends?

Dietmar Girams from Germany fished the Shannon on a sunny 4th June and commented very good but didn’t record his catch.

Darren Cripps from London fished the Shannon on a sunny 5th June using maggot bread sweetcorn ground-bait hemp and worms to catch Perch and Roach. Fish were spoiled for choice.

Tony Murphy from Ballinasloe recorded a good day’s catch of Perch Bream and hybrids while fishing the Hot Water on 27th May.

Barry Crawford from Bromsgrove fished at Devenish on 2nd June in sunshine using sweetcorn to catch roach to 1.5 lbs.

Gerry Malcolm from Maidenhead fished the Suck and Shannon on a sunny 7th June using maggot and worm to catch Tench, hybrids and a small pike. Good fishing all round commented Gerry.

Kevin Edwards from Walsall fished the Hot Water on a sunny 7th June using float and maggot to catch 52 lbs of Tench and Roach. Tench to 5 lbs and Roach to 1 lb. Mark Edwards also fished the Hot Water on 7th June using float and maggot to catch 17 lbs. of Roach and hybrid and one Tench. Sandra Firmstone from Walsall fished alongside the Edwards and used pole and maggot to catch a mixed bag of 90 fish that weighed 15 lbs. It was only Sandra’s third time ever fishing.

Allen Harrison and Joan Foster from Golborne fished the Grand Canal at Ferbane on a sunny / cloudy 8th June using maggot and float to catch 60 fish variety of species.

Young Thomas Carty from Dublin fished on the Shannon on a sunny 9th June using a maggot and worm cocktail to catch a fine Perch of 2 lbs which he returned alive.

DECEASED MEMBERS MEMORIAL CUP ….

After having caught plenty of sub ten pound pike downriver the week before Athlone Anglers were on Lough Ree last Sunday in search of those double figured rarities and with twenty boats taking to the water in practically ideal conditions the omens were good. However, the omens are not always correct and only one fish in double figures was brought to the scales and the big smiles on the faces of James Kearney and Michael Sherriff gave it away as to whose fish it was.  The presentation of prizes took place that evening in Fiddler’s Bar where Tracy Thompson was our excellent hostess and where Michael and James were delighted to accept the Deceased members Memorial Cup for their 15 lb 7 oz pike. For the second week in a row Conor Hannon and Sean Kelly claimed second spot with a pike weighing 7 lb 10 ozs which was smaller than their fish from the week before. Third place went to Eddie O’Donovan for his pike of 7 lb 1 oz with Gerry Wykes claiming fourth for his pike of 6 lb 8 oz.  The fifth and final spot went to two of our junior members Eoin O’Neill and John Naughton for their pike weighing 6 lb 1 oz.
This competition was sponsored by Tracy Thompson of Fiddler’ Bar and our thanks to her for her continued and generous support and for the delicious hospitality on the evening. Our thanks also go to Sean Kelly and Liam O’Sullivan as they were our Captains’ of the Day.

HARP LAGER CUP ….

Next Sunday we will be going back downriver as the competition for the Harp Lager Cup takes place.

Sven Deschepper from Belgium fished the Suck on a sunny 10th June and used Flying ‘C’ lures to catch 9 pike to 78 cm. Eight were returned alive. The day before he fished the Shannon and had two pike to 65cm also on Flying ‘C’s.

Benny Beermont from Belgium fished the Suck on the 10th June using Flying ‘C’ lures to catch two pike. Best was 67 cm. Benny fished the Shannon on the 9th  June and caught 5 pike to 68cm using Flying ‘C’s.

Bill Clark from Essex fished the Shannon in fair weather on 12th June using blue coloured plug bait to catch a 4 lbs pike and a 1 lb Perch.

Kevin Doorss from Essex used lures on the Shannon on 12th June to catch two pike of 3 lbs each

Heibert Hafelo from Switzerland fished the Shannon on 12th June catching a 59cm pike while using a spinner.

ATHLONE’S LUCKIEST FISHERMAN WINS TIPPERARY WATER CUP ….

With the Mayfly season over our attention turned last Sunday to Pike fishing when twenty boats went through the lock gates heading down river with hopes of winning the Tipperary Water Cup. While the fishing on the day was good with most boats recording a catch unfortunately they were all small fish with no fish in double figures brought to the scales. On a day like that it was going to take a stroke of luck to catch the winner and it was Martin McCaffrey who had that stroke of luck. It was once said of Martin by a very wise man from Coosan that “it’s better to be a lucky fisherman than a good one” and this was proved to be the case as this was the only fish that Martin caught on the day. Martin was fishing with his son in law Dave Wheatley and Dave had a total of five fish but he was unable to match Martin’s for size.  The presentation of prizes was held that evening in Samz Tavern where Derek Moran was, as ever, our generous host. As already stated the competition was won by Martin McCaffrey and Dave Wheatley with a pike weighing 8 lb 4 ozs and in a close finish Conor Hannon and Sean Kelly came second with their pike weighing 8lb 1 oz, only three ounces lighter! Dominic Conway, fishing on his own, claimed third place for his pike of 6 lb 7 ozs. Thomas Killion, one of our Captains of the Day, with a pike weighing 5lb 15ozs collected fourth prize while Anthony Quinn, our local cobbler and tackle shop owner, with a pike of 4 lb 12 ozs was awarded fifth place.  Our thanks to Derek Moran of Samz Tavern for his continued and generous sponsorship of this competition and also for his generous hospitality on the night. Thanks also to Thomas Killion and Eamon Cunningham who were the Captain’s of the Day.

DECEASED MEMBERS MEMORIAL CUP ….

The pike competition for the Deceased Members Memorial Cup will take place next Sunday, June 15th on Lough Ree. As usual there will be two starting points, Gallagher’s Boat Shed and Portrun, with both starts at 10.30 am. The contact numbers for the Captain’s will be given to angler’s on the morning of the competition. This competition is sponsored by Tracy Thompson of Fiddler’s Bar and the presentation of prizes will take place there that evening.

Ivan Vandeuren from Belgium fished the Shannon on 3rd June in good weather trolling dead bait and caught 3 pike weighing about 9 lbs. each, and one brown trout of 0.5 lbs. His friend Etreme Goemere from Belgium fished alongside and used a rubber fish lure to catch 3 pike weighing 11, 10 and 10 lbs. On 4th June the Belgians finished their holiday at the mouth of the River Brosna.

Daniel Deschl from Germany fished the Shannon on a sunny 3rd June using dead bait to catch his first fish in Ireland – two pike 75 cm and 65 cm.

Wolfgang Lirch from Germany caught his first pike on the Shannon on a sunny 3rd June using a wobbler. Two pike measuring 50 cm and 43 cm.

Jurgen Appel from Germany fished the Shannon on a sunny 4th June using dead bait to catch a pike of 72 cm.

Christian Hogel fished the Shannon on a sunny 3rd June using a Mepps lure to catch a pike of 48 cm.

Walter Ecker from Germany fished the Shannon on 5th June in sunshine using dead bait to catch two pike measuring 72 and 60 cm.

Airel Dorstewite from Germany fished the Shannon on 5th June using dead bait to land his first big fish – a pike measuring 80 cm.

Bob Cronin from Suffolk fished the Shannon on 6th June using a spinner and caught one pike of 2.5 lbs. Great day / poor fishing commented Bob.

Cyril Cronin from Blythburgh fished the Brosna on a fine 6th June using a Rapala trout lure to catch a pike of 1.75 lbs.

Pat Dorrego from Harrow London also fished the Brosna on 6th June using a plug bait to catch one pike of 40 cm. Lucky Day was his comment.

Hi Paul

By now, you should have received a picture of the first Shark of the year caught aboard Tigger on Sunday 15th June. See http://www.cfb.ie/fishing_in_ireland/update/sea_angling.htm for picture of the first Shark of the year from Ireland in 2008

Tigger owned by John Angles and Skippered by Adrian Sparrow anchored on a known Common Skate Mark about 6 miles SW of the Mizen and tried for Skate and Blue Shark.  At about half past two the first run came on Sean Lynn’s rod and he landed a Blue Shark weighing 48 lb.  An hour and a half later a second run came again to Sean Lynn’s rod and he successfully landed another Blue at 62 lb.

During this time a small hake and a 7 lb Spurdog were taken on the bottom along with numerous Pollack and a few Haddock, sadly no Skate. Three sharks were also spotted in the rubby dubby trail during this time.  Both Sharks were tagged and released.

FISHING ON THE BEARA

Paul Harris reports

The last week of May provided good sport all round with the mackerel arriving in good numbers and plenty of hungry predators ready to take a piece of fresh fillet.

Father and son Huub and Mart Honen from Holland were on their annual weeks visit and Huub was hoping for better luck as last year he was confined to bed for the week with a slipped disc and had to go home by air ambulance. It was little consolation that son Mart would come to his bedside each night and show him pictures of the fish he was catching.

This year however all was well and their target of catching some rays was well and truly achieved with twenty eight  thornbacks for the week along with pollack, huss, dogfish, mullet and  mackerel. All in all a memorable week and they are already planning their return.

I took my ‘angling apprentice’, 13 year old Liam Redding to Dursey sound for his first attempt at catching a wily mullet but fishing was put on hold for a while as we watched several Basking shark swimming about with some passing only feet in front of us. Although the mullet were under no threat from these plankton eating monsters they were not to know this and kept well away. Once the shark moved however we had our chances with the mullet and only inexperience of dealing with a large fish prevented Liam from recording not only his first mullet but a specimen as well when he lost a fish well over five pounds. Consolation came with some smaller fish to two pounds and I caught the best of the session at about 3 pounds.

REMINDER – Bass Bye-Law

Bass Season re-opens 16th. June 2008

The Bass Bye-Law

Sea Bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, have enjoyed legal protection in
Ireland for over ten years. The current measures in place for anglers are:
• A bag limit of 2 Bass per angler in any one 24hr period.
An overall size limit of 40cm (tip of snout to end of tail), where all smaller fish are returned alive.

• A closed season from 15 May to 15 June.

Sale or offer for sale of Bass (other than Bass which has been imported into the State) prohibited. These measures are enforced by the staff of the Regional Fisheries Boards and the Department of the Marine. All concerned anglers on seeing any of the above laws being violated should report the matter to their Regional Fisheries Board.

Luke Aston ‘Clare Dragoon’ Angling Column 2008

Another busy week on the Clare Dragoon with Tope showing at every try

Report dated June 17th …

It was another busy week on the Clare Dragoon. A group in for 3 days fishing had 23 species of fish for their trip. Among that collection was a specimen John Dory of 4 lbs 1 oz. This was caught on a baited devil rig in about 60 meters of water.

The Tope fishing took off for me this week with fish showing at every try. This was probably helped by the fact that the tide run was not as strong as the previous week. The best fish in the boat so far has been just over 30 lbs and in a change from last year where almost all my Tope were male, the fish this year have been split about 50/50 between the sexes.

Mackerel have been moving up the estuary east of Loop head and this week there are some signs of some big Pollock feeding under them. There is also a good sign of small Saith close in to the land.

Report dated June 11th …

I started the week with the arrival of three fisherman for a weeks fishing and some glorious weather! The wind had gone round to the west at long last and our first day out was for some long drifts on the reefs west of Loop head. The fishing was great and a good mixture of fish were coming to the boat. The next day was more of the same. For the middle days of the week the wind freshened and we stayed inside Loop head to fish in some comfort. Bottom fishing at anchor just east of the head produced some nice Conger to about 12 lbs and some Bull huss. Spinning and jigging was also turning up some small Pollack. Another try at the Tope still failed to produce a fish in the boat but the tide was very strong over the while we tried. Slack water only lasted for about 15 minutes and was then running at about 4 to 5 knots, not ideal!

The winds dropped again towards the end of the week and another fine day was had on the drift. Saturday was a day charter and after a fruitful morning west of the head, we again decided to try the turn of the tide for the Tope. This short session did at last produce a fish in the boat, tipping the scales at around 20 lbs, but at last a fish! Sunday’s group wanted to spend the full day on the reefs and we again had a fruitful day. One of the bonuses was quite a few Ling to 12 lbs pounds were landed.

In general the fishing is very good at the moment, although I am travelling up to 10 miles off the land to get into really good catches of white fish. The fishing closer to the land is still relatively quite, with fishing inside 4 miles quite poor. Mackerel are very plentiful around Loop head and to be had in spots all over from the headland out. However they are still scarce in the estuary.

MORNING STAR TARGETED MACKEREL AND POLLOCK THIS WEEK WITH GOOD RESULTS – REPORT DATED JUNE 17th, 2008

Report dated June 17th:

Weather conditions have been good with a mix of some good calm weather, overcast and good sunny spells at times. This has resulted in good fishing conditions at sea. I have been concentrating on Mackerel and Pollock drifting, which is what my groups wanted and I have been fishing West and South of Loop head. I have been catching Mackerel in good numbers, any amount really from Horse Island to Loop Head and some good Pollock showed up south of the Loop, up to two miles out.  Baited Feathers proved the best choice of bait for the Pollock.

Tope season commences for the Morning Star charter

Report dated June 2nd:

This week has again started with easterly winds and I was expecting things to slow up a bit but despite this we have been able to catch fish in all the usual marks. I have been out with a mixed party of both Dutch and English anglers, this was very nice for me as both these parties have become good friends and have exchanged email addresses and will return to fish together next year. Surely this shows that a weeks fishing has great benefits as a bonding exercise. I started by trying each day at the optimum stages of tide to fish for Tope and succeeded in catching many fine fish once I got clued into the seasonal change in these fish. Many of the boats just sat there at last years optimum times but unfortunately for them the fish don’t have watches and keep old schedules. Tope can be had at Beal Bar and Ballybunion, I have had fish to 33 lbs. there, Ray are also to be caught in any of the Ray marks, and some fine fish to 12 lbs. were caught. I also had Bull huss to 15 lbs. Mackerel are again in the estuary and are being caught as far as Moneypoint with many Dolphins feeding on them.

The Predator is helmed by the well-known, fully qualified seaman, Hamish Currie. With a lifetime of experience of the sea and qualifications to match, you are always going to be in safe hands.

Hamish reports on the capture of a herring of 1 lbs. (0.454 Kg.) which is currently larger than the current Irish Record of 0.425 Kg caught off Rathlin Island in 1986

“I didn’t know it was a new record and I brought them back to the house and put it in the freezer for bait as I don’t eat fish so the photo is not a great one as once I found out it was a record then I had to defrost it for a picture.

The fish was caught inside red bay and I got 5 of them also 2 Irish specimens and I caught them using a mustad shrimp rig on my spinning rod, I was in amongst a shoal of mackerel at the time and I caught 5 big herring amongst them.”

This unique capture is our catch of the week, (20 June 2008) this week see www.cfb.ie for photo of Hamish and his big Herring as described above.
