News from Annamoe Trout Fishery….

Press Release                                                                                                                        21st November 2006

ANGLERS BRAVE THE COLD WEATHER FOR THE FOURTH HEAT OF THE SCIERRA WINTER LEAGUE

The fourth qualifying heat for the Scierra Winter League Fly Fishing competition took place on Saturday, 18th November at Annamoe Trout Fishery, Annamoe Co. Wicklow. Anglers were forced to change peg positions every half hour instead of every hour due to the strong winds and cold temperatures. Fly casting was not easy in these conditions and with water temperatures plummeting to 6 degrees, the rainbows were lying low. After four hours of fishing, 16 anglers only landed 8 trout. This is the lowest catch yet in any of the winter leagues held at Annamoe over the last 5 years.

Ironically, after the competition had finished, David Rowan from Naas, Co. Kildare landed 4 fish after having no luck during the competition. The overall winner was local angler, Sean McLoughlin from Rathdrum, Co Wicklow with 2 trout caught with nymphs on a floating line and intermediate leader. Pat Noonan from Tipperary secured second place with 2 trout and third place went to another local angler, Martin O’Hara with 1 trout.

The 5th and final heat of the Scierra Winter League will take place on Saturday 25th November. Please contact Brian Nally, Annamoe Trout Fishery on 0404-45470 to secure your place. Fishing times are 10.30am – 2.30pm (please arrive at 10.00am to draw pegs). The first 4 finishers in each heat will qualify for the grand final. PLEASE NOTE: the date for the final of the Scierra Winter League has been changed from the 2nd December to the 9th December.

Best of luck to all competing anglers….

                                                ……Ends…..

Cashel Trout Fishery Annual Competition report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

A million thanks, to the nineteen anglers who took part in our annual competition.  The conditions were excellent, slightly overcast with a slight breeze.  The men fished from 10 am to 3.30 pm with five fish being the limit.  It was a very close and exciting contest because there was never a dull moment with fish being caught steadily throughout and no one knowing how big the next fish was going to be.

Mr Michael McCloskey, sponsor of Cashel Perpetual Cup and Cashel Trout Fishery Trophies presented the winners with their prizes.

Awards were made for:

1st Heaviest single fish – winner James Mc Feely (Derry) 9 lb 15 ozs

2nd Heaviest bag of fish – winner Martin Bradley (Dungiven) 11 lb 10 ozs

3rd Runner up heaviest bag of fish – winner Andy Mc Cloy (Coleraine) 8 lb 15 ozs

Young Kevin O’Kane (Limavady), although he didn’t win any of the three prizes, did very well landing a 7 lb 9 ozs Rainbow using a Black Fritz.  Cat’s Whiskers and Fritz Flies seemed to be the most common Fly used during the competition as well as a few Egg Flies, Pheasant Tails and Green Olives.  Prizes consisted of rod, reel, lines, boxes of flies and accessories.
Well done to all this weekend!
Breakfast is now being served at Cashel in the comfort of an open log fire with plenty of craic.
Group bookings most welcome during the week.
Tight lines for next weekend and fingers crossed for a tagged trout.

CREGGAN COUNTRY PARK FISHING NOTEBOOK

We are holding a fishing competition on Sunday 5th November starting at 10.00am and ending at 3.00 pm. Anglers may use worm or fly and entry will cost £12 for a four fish ticket. With quality prizes for the three heaviest trout there is sure to be a big demand for boats that will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The boats may be booked in advance at a cost of £8. Anglers may fish fly from both bank and boat will worm fishing remains restricted to the West way bank.

We will be restocking for this competition and anglers will be pleased to note that we have secured stocks of good conditioned trout that should over winter well and provide good sport throughout the winter months.

After the doldrums of a long hot summer things have been picking up lately with some nice fish to 7 lbs being taken on fly. Fishing over the last couple of weeks Gavin Nixon had a few nice fish from 3 lbs 10 oz to 7 lbs 8 oz and released a trout weighing around 8 lbs, all taken on a green Sleech on a floating line.  At present the mild autumn weather is perfect for fishing, and with a nice breeze it is still possible to pick up fish on a floating line.

The easy casting along the entire northern bank makes it a dream for fly-fishing, and the shallows along the edge attract lots of early morning feeders.

UPPER SHANNON

ShRFB Reports for the Upper Shannon Region
Water levels are quite high but fishable but few reports received. The Boyle canal is fishing well.
MID SHANNON AREA
Meelick Magic reported by two Roscrea anglers
Francis Cummins & Tom Delaney of Roscrea fished the bay just below the pumphouse at Meelick beside the moored boat on Friday 13th October. They bagged 74 lbs and 56 lbs of mainly roach & perch with 1 bream of 6 lbs. 5 ozs. They used 6m pole to hand using size 18 hook & red maggot as bait. It was a fish a chuck as the fish moved into the bay from the flow.
The ShRFB reports for Ray Duthie Old Forge Banagher, Bait Stockist, Tackle and ACCOMMODATION PROVIDER  Tel: 057 9151504.  BANAGHER area this week.
The river Shannon is at a fishable level for the time of year but is pulling quite hard in the main flow. Shannon harbour is fishing between the point of the River Brosna and the Grand Canal. Banagher Marina is fishing well for mixed fish, Roach, Perch, and Skimmers. This is a good winter stretch and worth trying.
Ivan O’Connell, Broadford, Co. Clare reports on a recent trip to the River Shannon at O’Brien’s Bridge
“I fished the Rowing Course section of the river on Tuesday the 31st of October just before the first heavy frosts arrived and had a lovely catch of about 30 lbs of mainly roach to 1 lb on 7m pole to hand. After the heavy rains there was a lovely colour in the water and this stretch always fishes well in these conditions. The heavy frosts combined with clear water will hamper sport for a while until some milder weather returns the colour to the water”.

MATCHING PAIR WINS ON LOUGH GLORE ….
It was a tough weekend on the angling scene. The weather was simply brutal, still we anglers are a crazy bunch and Angling Focus braved the elements to bring you yet another action packed report. We reported last week that Trim angler Joe O’Donnell was enjoying his winter piking. Unfortunately the photo was lost, so hopefully we will make up for it this week. On the competition scene it was another Trim angler who topped the day on a cold and very wet Lough Glore. It proved a very special weekend for one of our local anglers; Mullingar Angler Frank Mc Keown was honoured with the captain of Mullingar Golf Club.
SMITH TASTES SUCCESS….
Retired Garda Sergeant Peter Smith from Trim, who we featured last week on Lough Derravaragh, has really got the taste for success. On Sunday last November 19th Peter topped the open pike competition on Lough Glore. This event was kindly sponsored by Blanchardstown anglers Charlie Maples and angling pal Alan O’Rourke. The weather on the day didn’t do any favours for the pike fishing. It started off quite nice, cold and frosty, but as the morning progressed the wind and rain that followed was dreadful. Lough Glore is very sheltered and even in very windy weather it’s possible to fish. On the day the pike proved stubborn, and only a few fish came on the feed. Peter hooked-up with two super pike after lunch and they both weighed exactly 9 lbs 10 oz. Earlier in the Morning Pat Rogers from Navan landed a good pike weighing 8 lbs 13 oz. Pat was fishing with Irish pike record holder Larry Kelly of Athboy. This fish secured second place for the Navan piker. Local angler paddy Smith finished 3rd with a pike weighing 3 lbs 3 oz.  Mullingar angler Anthony Scally was very unlucky. Anthony landed two small pike on the day but unfortunately was just piped in the prizes. The pike fell to a variety of lures and dead bait. I fished the competition with my younger brother J.J. and succeeded in getting three runs on dead bait, but unfortunately all fish dropped the bait. Oh well that’s fishing, another day you would land all three. None of the Junior anglers caught fish, but still it’s encouraging to see the young anglers taking part in these winter pike competitions.
GLORE COMPETITIONS….
In the coming weeks Lough Glore anglers will be in action. On Saturday next the Castlepollard Angling Centre open pike competition will be fished. This is a very popular event and some excellent prizes will be up for grabs on the day. Fishing is from 11am-3-30pm
.On Sunday week December 3rd the Larry Kelly/Joey Dunlop pike competition will take place also on Lough Glore. Fishing will be from 10am-4pm.More on these events please contact Castlepollard Angling centre 086-3686146.
DERRAVARAGH NEWS….
The Coffee Shop and Restaurant at Donore shore is closed for the winter months, and will reopen on St. Patrick’s weekend 2007. Boat & Engine hire is available all year round at Donore, and if you are interested in fishing Lough Derravaragh contact Paul Smith on 086-8230363.With this in mind we are told all hands are on deck for next Sundays Christmas pike competition which will be fished on Derravaragh and hosted by Derravaragh A.C. Plenty of prizes are there to be won on the day, and after the results of the last competition anglers are expecting a good result on the day. Also next Sunday night the Annual Derravaragh Christmas raffle takes place in Weirs Multyfarnham. if you are in the area call in and support this wonderful night
CHRISTMAS STOCKING FILLER….
Over the coming weeks till Christmas we will feature some items and gadgets which might just fill your Christmas stocking. I know from the feed back from Angling Focus that quite a few of your loved ones and partners flick through Angling Focus. Mind you they could be checking that you were actually out fishing. Anyway if you are into reading or the history of rivers etc, one item that pops to mind is the recent launch of a beautiful book on the River Slaney. The book is called River Slaney “from Source To sea” and it was written by John Duffy of Tullow.  John’s book illustrates every single Bridge over the Slaney River and also contained loads of info on the Slaney River, which some day may come in useful.  If you are planning a trip to fish the famous river. The 123 page book was launched on November 7th by Sean Rock of R.T.E. “As the River Flows” and it is crammed with beautiful pencil drawing of the Bridges over the Slaney River. These drawing were also done by John Duffy and some took over forty hours to complete. The forward for the book was written by none other that environmentalist Dick Warner of Waterways Fame. The publication was featured last week on Nationwide. This surely is a real Christmas Stocking Filler for any angler who loves the flow of the Rivers…..

Now that the fishing season has come to an end and all the boats, engines and tackle have been safely put away for the winter it is time to honour those who won competitions during the year and so the Annual Presentation Night will take place on Saturday 25th November. The event will take place in the newly refurbished Shamrock Lodge Hotel and promises to be a great night. The action gets underway at 8.30pm and there will be a buffet, which will be served at 9pm followed by entertainment into the wee small hours with plenty of prizes to be won throughout the night. INNY BAY B&B reports on fishing on the lower River Inny and Lough Ree
Angling guests of Inny Bay B&B, Julio and Walter from Switzerland fished Lough Ree for pike last week. They did very well recording several whopping fish into the 20’s with their best fish a specimen of 34 lbs.
Mick Flanagan, Angling Correspondent for the Westmeath Topic and Sunday World Newspaper Tel: 087 2797270: mick@midlandangling.com reports on Midland Lakes & Rivers.
TURKEY & HAM PIKE COMPETITION ….
Yes it’s the time of year when local angling clubs host their annual Christmas competitions. Over the coming weeks plenty of prizes will be up for grabs on our local lakes. We will keep you up to date on these events as they draw closer. This week we have another action packed report with Derravaragh Anglers producing some fine pike.
Last Sunday 12th November Lough Derravaragh hosted one of their winter pike competitions, this proved quite successful with some good double figure pike being landed on the day. Fishing was from 11 am-3-30 pm and at the final weigh-in once again Derravaragh top piker John Corcoran topped the day with a pike 13 lbs 10 oz. John was fishing with angling pal Damian Grifferty and the lads hooked up with quite a few fish on the day. It was Derravaragh Secretary Paddy Ward who finished second with a pike 12 lbs 8 oz. Paddy had a very good day which saw him land up to seven fish dead-baiting. Peter Smith finished 3rd with another fine pike weighing 11 lbs 7 oz, and Derravaragh angler Peter Donoghue came 4th with 9 lbs 2 oz. Prior to the presentation of prizes at Donore Shore Jimmy Nally Chairman Derravaragh Anglers thanked all who fished on the day. He also reminded anglers that the Annual Christmas Pike Competition will be fished on November 26th. There are plenty of prizes going on the day. Also that night in Weirs Bar & Lounge the clubs Christmas raffle will take place. At present tickets are in circulation and you are asked to support this night.
JOE LANDS HIS PIKE….
Over the season we have bumped into one of Trims top all round anglers Joe O’Donnell. Joe is very much involved in Trim & District angling club and is a regular visitor to Derravaragh, Owel & Lene.  Joe is a dab hand at catching pike and really loves his winter piking. Joe will be in action in the coming weeks at the Christmas pike competitions and we wish him all the best in getting the Christmas Turkey.
UPCOMING EVENTS…
Over the next few weeks local clubs will be busy with their Christmas competitions. On Sunday next Lough Glore
anglers will be in action when they host the Charlie Maples and Alan O’Rourke open pike competition. Fishing from 10am-4pm. On the following Sunday Derravaragh Angles host their Christmas Competition – see Derravaragh notes”.

SEA ANGLING

South Western Region:

Some Irish sea anglers go on Holiday to Norway to catch big Cod annually but maybe they should reconsider KINSALE next year.  Recently, well known specimen hunters Ailbhe O’Sullivan from Fermoy and Michael Dennehy from Blarney fished on a small boat over an offshore wreck.  Using 6 inch Shad baits, they caught some fantastic Cod including three over the specimen weight of 20 lbs.  Ailbhe caught two specimens of 10.5 Kilos (23 lbs.  2.4 oz.) and 12.55 Kilos (27 lbs 10.7 oz.) but Michael caught the biggest Cod, a huge fish of 33.9 lbs.  This fish is the biggest rod caught Cod in over 4 years reported to the Irish Specimen Fish Committee.  Needless to say all three fish have been claimed with the committee.

This week’s “CATCH OF THE WEEK” in conjunction with the RTE Radio programme hosted Tom MacSweeney was recorded at nearby Kinsale.  Michael Dennehy from Blarney was out deep sea fishing with friends and caught a huge specimen Cod of 33.9 lbs.  Michael caught his fish on a 6 inch Shad bait and it is the biggest reported rod caught cod for four years.  A picture of this magnificent fish can be seen on the Seascapes and Central Fisheries Board websites tomorrow.  See Photos on www.cfb.ie  and on the RTE Radio Seascapes website at http://www.rte.ie/radio1/seascapes/1115359.html

FISHING ON THE BEARA

Paul Harris reports

Some good shore fishing here with Colin Erscott, Paul Crocker, Gary Loveless and Kevin from Somerset and Dorset taking some super catches of fish.
During their weeks stay ragworm bait proved deadly and one day alone they caught over fifty wrasse between 3-5 pounds. It also proved to be very effective for the pollack but spinning took the best fish to 6 pounds with bigger fish lost.
Throw in double figure huss and conger on squid and mackerel, lure caught bass and even a few cuckoo wrasse and it all added up to an excellent weeks fishing as they explored the bountiful Beara.

Anyone looking for information on fishing on the Beara can contact me at dromagowlanehouse@eircom.net or ring me on 027 60330. Web site www.dromagowlanehouse.com

This week’s “CATCH OF THE WEEK” was recorded at nearby Kinsale.

GILTHEAD BREAM (Sparus aurata L.) IN IRELAND See Photo on our website at http://www.cfb.ie/fisheries_research/gilthead/index.htm
In recent years occasional specimens of gilthead bream have been recorded off the south coast of Ireland, mainly by anglers. This species is an excellent sport angling species which is common in the Mediterranean. Its distribution also extends to northern France and the south coast of England.
Preliminary observations suggest that gilthead bream are beginning to colonise the Irish coastline. It is important to document the extent of their distribution and to monitor their progress. The Marine Sports Fish Section of the Central Fisheries Board has embarked on a programme to study gilthead bream and anglers can help by recording any captures of the fish. Information requested is as follows:
FOR FISH RETURNED ALIVE
Date and exact location of capture
Length (in cm) of each fish measured from tip of head to end rays in the middle of the fork of the tail
Weight (in kg) if possible
Method of capture
Bait
Scale sample (6-8 scales) – special scale envelopes can be supplied to anglers interested in assisting this study or put scales in ordinary envelope
Photograph of fish (if possible)
OR ALTERNATIVELY PLEASE RETAIN THE BODY OF THE FISH YOU CATCH and contact the number below to arrange collection.
