The genus Tor, the mahseers, comprising 20 or more species, is widespread in southern Asia, from Afghanistan in the west through Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka to Thailand and Malaysia in the east, and is also present in China.

 
It is possibly the most iconic and important freshwater game, food and ornamental fish of the region, a critical indicator species and of great cultural value.
