The month of August once again, looks like proving an anglers nightmare as regards the number of fish being caught, certainly if the first five days of the month are anything to go on. The un-seasonal high water level, linked to extremely high oxygen saturation within the upper reaches is definitely making things very difficult for anglers visiting Llys-y-Fran Reservoir, even for those anglers who fish the water on a regular basis, and who obviously know the water extremely well.

Since the start of the 2008 season, Ranger staff at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir have been stocking a small number of what we consider “Trophy Fish” on a monthly basis. These, if we are honest have been very slow in the way in which they have come out. The past week however, seems to have made up for this even considering the abnormal seasonal conditions experienced. A high percentage of anglers now taking more than a couple of fish as a part of their bag total, are recording at least one fish of 5lbs plus.

Rex Edwards, a season permit holder recorded a six fish bag of 19lbs 7ozs on the last day of July. The bag limit whilst fishing Ledgered Worm from “Fisherman’s Row” included a best fish of 6lbs 5ozs. Nice one Rex, one of your best bags of the season so far. Paddy Smiddy of Narbeth, another season permit holder bested that total the following day with only five fish. His bag, which included a Rainbow of 5lbs 12ozs and a best fish of 7lbs, totalled 19lbs 12 ozs. What happened to the last fish Paddy?

Marks_6lb_1oz_930552036.jpgMark Marsden of Neyland recorded on of the best bags by an angler fishing fly from the bank of the past week, even though he only took four fish. His bag which totalled 16lbs 1oz included two fish of over 5lbs with a best of 6lbs 1oz. A fish which if my memory serves is Mark’s best of the 2008 season. Edgar George of St Dogmaels recorded the best six fish bag for an angler fishing fly from the boat during the same period. His six fish limit taken on Sunday totalled 14lbs 3ozs.

Honours of the week however no, honours of the season so far must go to young Emma Pudsey of Kilgetty who recorded a staggering six fish limit of 29lbs 4ozs  on Saturday 2nd August, whilst fishing Ledgered Worm from the west bank. Her bag limit included two fish of 5lbs, one of 6lbs and a best fish of the week of 8lbs. Nice one Emma, I won’t repeat what your angling partner of the day wrote on your return.

This week’s free permit from all permits returned is awarded to Albert Richards of Martetwy.
