The past few weeks have seen a marked increase in the sport now being offered to anglers opting to use the fly as their preferred method at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. Fish are now being taken throughout all areas of the Reservoir, despite the bright sunny weather experienced. The amount of food now available within the upper reaches, due to some heavy hatches of fly and wind born insects such as beetle has it appears kept the fish feeding high in the water.

This improvement was made clear on Saturday 9th June with Tawe Angling Association’s visit; this Club was holding its second competition at Llys-y-Fran during the 2007 season and the 23 anglers that took part had what can only be described as a “cracking day’s sport”. In all 102 fish were taken at a 4.5 fish average with only one angler failing to land a fish. Out of the 23 anglers taking part within the competition 16 recorded limit bags on the day, the majority being taken within the first three hours of the competition.

The recent improvement has also meant that some anglers have been taking some of their best fish from the water in recent years. Gavin Perry landed what will probably be one of the best Browns for the 2007 season with a fish of 5lbs, although his boat partner Gary Preston still has the best Rainbow of this season with a fish of 11lbs 12.5ozs.

Sadly the same cannot be said for those anglers opting to fish ledgered worm as their preferred method. With the fish feeding high in the water, knowledge of the water is proving to be essential for bank anglers wanting to take fish. All visiting anglers are reminded that there is an experienced ranger service on site, the majority of whom are fishermen themselves, it should be stressed that they are always available for advice.

Dia Page of Penparc Cardigan recorded the best bag for an angler fishing fly from the boat over the past seven days. His six fish bag totalled 13lbs in all, a good average fish size for any water. Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest, one of our season anglers however must take honours when it comes to those fishing the fly. Once again Brian recorded the heaviest bag for an angler using this method. His six fish which included a “blue” of 5lbs 3ozs totalled 14lbs 1oz.

This week’s best bag despite the fact that the fish are generally feeding high in the water, once again was recorded by an angler using ledgered worm. Gareth Downey of Maesteg another regular visitor (with knowledge of the water obviously) who, despite the distance took six fish for 14lbs 12ozs this included a best fish of 5lbs, well done Gareth.

This week’s free permit goes to Raymond Williams of Tumble. Hope you enjoy your next visit Raymond.
