April 2011

The past eight weeks has produced some excellent sport at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir for anglers fishing the Fly from both bank and boat as well as for those fishing Ledgered Worm, throughout the majority of areas available. Weather conditions for March began with some fairly chilly days but soon picked up and since the beginning of April, have been bright and sunny with relatively light to moderate winds, which has brought the water temperature up to what would be considered the seasonal norm, despite the extended cold period from December and March.

The area of bank known as the “Field” has, fished consistently well on both ledgered worm and fly with some very good bags being weighed in. Average bags are now generally in excess of 12lbs for six fish, showing an average weight per fish caught of 2lbs plus. Other areas which are also producing consistently well include; “The Big Meadow”, the woods on the western bank, “Rainbow Bay” and (for boat anglers) “The Point”, “Rainbow Bay” and the top of the long arm.

Notable bags and fish over the reporting period from anglers fishing fly from the boat are as follows: Clive Jones of Ammanford, 14lbs for six fish, this included a best fish of 3lbs 2ozs. P Jones of Carmarthen with six fish for 14lbs 2ozs. Mike Davie, also of Carmarthen with six fish for 14lbs 2ozs. Ron Lewis of Carmarthen with six fish for 15lbs, Ron’s bag included a best fish of 3lbs. P J Evans Ron’s boat partner also recorded a six fish bag for 15lbs. Honours for the boat however go to Mike Elias with six fish for 17lbs 4ozs, Mike’s bag included a best fish of 4lbs.

During the same period some of the best bags recorded by those opting to fish fly from the bank are as follows; Gerald John of Fishguard, six fish for 14lbs 8ozs. Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest, six fish for 15lbs 2ozs. Steve Thomas of Wolfscastle with six fish for 16lbs 2ozs, Steve’s bag included a best fish of 3lbs 10ozs and E Bevan of Clunderwen with six fish for 16lbs 8ozs.

As for last year, once again those opting to fish ledgered worm appear to be producing the heavier bags and fish, these include the following: A J Cole of Llanychaer with six fish for 16lbs 15ozs and with a best fish of 4lbs 3ozs. Tony Smith of Saundersfoot with six fish for 17lbs, F R Hawk of St Clears with six fish for 17lbs 3ozs. P Smiddy of Narbeth with six fish form 18lbs 4ozs. D Jones of Carmarthen and G Rees of Ammanford however have definitely recorded the best bags of the season so far with weights of 20lbs and 20lbs 7ozs respectively.

The heaviest fish landed so far this season is a Rainbow Trout of 7lbs 3ozs.
